Menstrual Cycle During the menstrual cycle an egg develops in an ovary. At the same time the uterus prepares for the arrival of an embryo. At the start of the menstrual cycle, the egg starts to mature and the uterine lining starts to thicken. If not fertilized, the lining and uterus and the egg start to break down. The extra blood and tissue pass out of the body through the vagina. This is called menstration.
