Chapter 2, Section 3 Friction
2
Friction Definition: a force that opposes motion between two surfaces that touch. Example: Tires on a street.
4
Friction Increases Explanation: Friction Increases with rough surfaces and more force. Example: Increase friction when cleaning a dish by using scrubby side of sponge
6
Friction Decreases Explanation: Friction decreases with smooth surfaces, less force, and lubricants (oil) Example: Streets are paved to decrease friction with wheels
8
Kinetic Friction Definition: Friction between moving surfaces Example: Wheels on a street
10
Sliding Kinetic Friction Definition: Friction that occurs when an object slides against a surface. Example: Ice skates on ice Pencil on paper
12
Rolling Kinetic Friction Definition: Friction that occurs when an object rolls against a surface. Example: Roller skates on floor, Car tires on street, skateboard on pavement, Bike on trail, ball rolling on a field
14
Static Friction Definition: When a force is applied to an object, but the object does not move. Example: pushing a car that dos not move
16
Fluid Friction Definition: Friction between an object and water or an object and air. Example: Surfboard on a wave, person diving into water, skydiver, airplane in air.
