OA1.1 Understanding force and motion Vocabulary Presentation: Force, Gravity, Weight, Mass, Friction and Magnetism

Word Definition Picture 1. Force A push or pull that makes something move!

Word Definition Picture 2. Gravity Force that pulls objects towards the center of the Earth

The ball goes up in the air and then falls down again. Think what happens when you throw a ball up into the air. FYI - Because of gravity…

Think what happens when you jump up into the air. You soon come down again to earth. FYI - Because of gravity…

Think what happens to ripe fruits such as apples that grow on trees. They will fall to the ground unless they are picked first.

Word Definition Picture 3. Weight Measurement of the force of gravity on an object Gravity pulling down on an object creates its “weight”

FYI When an astronaut moves away from the earth they “lose” weight. Weight is caused by the force of attraction between the earth and objects on its surface. The greater the distance an object has from the earth, the less the force of attraction which would exist.

Word Definition Picture 4. Mass The amount of “stuff” that something has Remains the same, no matter where you Are!

FYI On different planets, your WEIGHT would change (due to the gravity of that planet) but your MASS stays the same! If you were able to go to the planet, Jupiter, your weight would be 27 time greater, because the mass of Jupiter is 27 times greater

Word Definition Picture 5. Friction Friction is the resistance between two surfaces that are in contact with each other.

There is friction between a car tire and the road with which it is in contact. FYI

Oil can reduce friction between rotating cogs. FYI

When we want to slow a bicycle quickly, we need to have a lot of friction between the brake blocks and the wheels they touch. FYI

A marble will move slower rolling across a carpet than a hard floor

Word Definition Picture 6.Magnetism force of attraction or repulsion Not all objects are affected by the Force of magnetism: wood, glass, paper, plastic (NO AFFECT) Common metals affected by Magnetism: iron, nickel, and cobalt
