Opinions  After I read the following statements, go stand next to the sign that expresses your viewpoint – either Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, or Strongly Disagree

Statements  Teenagers are savvy enough to know about the effects of tanning  Parents, not legislators, should be responsible for their teenage children’s tanning activities  Tanning facilities should warn users about the potential risks of tanning  Teenagers, not their parents, should be responsible for their own health decisions

Statements continued  Knowing about health risks would not influence teenagers to make responsible decisions  The legal age to buy cigarettes should be increased to 21 – the same as alcohol  Laws should be implemented in every state that prevents smoking from all public areas

Skin Cancer Information  Since 2003, 19+ states have passed laws restricting access to indoor tanning to people under 18 years of age  Tanning beds have the equivalent health peril of cigarettes  The tanning industry is a $5 billion a year business  On an average day, more than 1 million Americans use a tanning salon  White women 16 – 49 make up 70% of customers of tanning salons  #1. In your opinion, should there be more or less restriction on the use of tanning beds? Explain  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3np65aByg8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3np65aByg8

Statistics  Melanoma is the most lethal form of skin cancer  1 person dies of melanoma every hour  There are more cases of skin cancer than breast, prostate, lung & colon cancers combined  Skin cancer is most common in women 25 – 29  1 in every 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime  #2. 6 Good to know  Prevention  Wearing an SPF 15+ sunscreen daily reduces the risk of skin cancer  1 or more blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence increases a person’s chance of developing melanoma later in life 2 times  Positives of sun exposure  Sun exposure (15 min or so per day depending on your skin type) does have some positive benefits  Vitamin D protects against osteoporosis, heart disease, & cancers. It also protects against depression, insomnia & an overactive immune system  # 3. Do you think the risks of sun exposure have drowned out the positive benefits? Explain

Lung Cancer Risks  The most important indicator of lung cancer is smoking tobacco  87% of all lung cancers in the U.S. are smoking- related  Exposure to second-hand smoke also increases your risk by 20-30%.  Second-hand smoke exposure also increase the risk of heart disease & other ailments  Other environmental factors for lunch disease include:  Asbestos  Radon  Industrial substances  Radiation exposure  Air pollution  TB  Genetics  Military service (exposure to Agent Orange; higher rates of smoking) #4. If tobacco is such a high indicator of lung cancer, why do people continue to smoke?

Lung Cancer Statistics  Lung cancer is the # 1 cause of cancer deaths in men and women in the U.S. & worldwide  It accounts for 27% of all cancer deaths  2/3 people diagnosed are 65+ so most people are older.
