1
Blood vessels of the head and face
2
Arteries Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to cells and tissue Can detect a pulse ‘spurt’ w/ cut or severed Aorta = largest artery of the body
3
Veins Carry deoxygenated blood from cells and tissues to the heart.
More superficial than arteries Closer to the skin ‘bluish’ in color Do not ‘spurt’ when cut
4
Carotid artery aka Common carotid artery
Main blood supply for the Head Neck Face Mouth Brain Eyes
5
Divisions of the carotid artery
Internal Delivers blood to the Brain Eyes External Face Oral cavity
6
External division Arteries are named after the area of the body they supply blood to. (just like the nerves.) Posterior Superior artery Delivers blood to Max. molars Middle Superior artery Delivers blood to Max. premolars Anterior Superior artery Deliver blood to Max. anterior teeth All are branches off of the Maxillary artery
7
External division Lingual artery Inferior Alveolar artery
Delivers blood to the tongue Inferior Alveolar artery Delivers blood to the mandibular teeth Mental artery Delivers blood to the chin All are branches off of the mandibular artery
8
Jugular vein 2 main divisions Internal External Drains blood from
Brain Eyes External all other tissues of the head and face
9
Divisions of the jugular vein
Superficial veins Facial vein Deep facial vein Retromandibular vein Lingual vein Deep veins Maxillary vein Pterygoid plexus of veins. All veins lead to the Superior vena cava Which drains blood into the R. atrium of the heart.
