What is the Purpose of a Research Paper? Duncan 2 The purpose of a research paper is to inform. You will present and interpret information that you research to support a chosen topic. You Write: inform, present, interpret

TITLE PAGE Your title page will be very similar to the heading of your 1 st page of any paper. This is a page designated solely to the heading and title of your paper. Proofs The basic structure of a proof is easy: it is just a series of statements, each one being either An assumption orAn assumption or A conclusion, clearly following from an assumption or previously proved result.A conclusion, clearly following from an assumption or previously proved result. RUNNING HEAD Duncan 7 This appears at the top right of each page. It consists of your last name, a space, and the page number of your paper. There are no commas! Parenthetical Citations These are used within the body of the text to signal to your reader that you are using cited material Examples…2 Options if 1 Author Examples…2 Options if 1 Author: “The Holocaust was the systematic, state- sponsored persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime” (Alderson 43). Alderson identifies that “the Holocaust was the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime” (43). *Notice that in the 1 st example, the author’s last name and page # are in parenthesis. *In the 2 nd one, the author’s last name is included in the text and just the page # is in parenthesis. *Notice: quotations and periods! Parenthetical Citations…Continued When Should You Use These? Quote Summary Paraphrase Quote: exact wording from a text. *Use quotations for this! Summary: shortened version of a passage…in YOUR OWN WORDS. *This does not need quotation! Paraphrase: detailed restatement…similar in length to original passage. *This does not need quotation marks!
