SMART BUILDING S- Selective M- Monitoring A- Around R- Routine T- Tasks

Outline  Motivation.  Introduction.  Scenario.  Requirements.  Architecture  System design.  Schema.  Related work  Demo

Motivation  To gain more experience in the wireless sensor network field.  To employ wireless sensor network for the benefits of users (students and visitors to NCTU buildings).

Introduction  What is a smart building? -Smart building system gives information for the users about each element inside the building by using wireless sensor networks. -RFID readers and tags are also used to achieve this goal. -A tag is attached near each object in the building.

…Introduction  Smart building data: - Offices: office’s name, professor’s name, professor’s schedule, publications and others. -Class rooms: class room schedule and other information. -Laboratories: lab’s name, lab’s members, researches and others. -Advertising boards: advertisements sorted by date.

Scenario  A mote sensing environmental data (ie. Lighting, Sounding) as long as detecting people in the room.  The mote updates its sensing data to database server periodically.  The web server requests for latest data from database server, whenever a user ask for displaying web pages.

Scenario – Cont.  A visitor to engineering building 3 in NCTU.  He approaches lab 633 with his notebook opened and browsing smart building website.  A tag attached near the lab will send lab id to RFID reader with the notebook.  The note book will request the related webpage about the lab from the server.  Then display the information.

Requirements  User requirements : - A note book computer with RFID reader. - An internet browser. - The user must be able to browse the system web site and view the required information.

…Requirements  System requirements: - A server to store the web pages (http server) - RFID tags. - A wireless network. - A library or API to support the RFID. - Other non-functional requirements such as user friendly interface and security.

System Design  System is designed as the following: - Using Visual studio.net inherited with RFID library to: * Retrieve ID value from the reader * Allow write new ID value to the RFID tag * Design the web pages and the interface.

System Design – Cont. - Using PHP/SQL to: Display web page dynamically Access database from web page Design administration zone through web page -Using Java/SQL to: Retrieve sensing data from mote to PC Upload sensing data from PC to database server

Schema  Installing all requirements (frameworks and libraries).  Doing experiments on RFID; writing to and reading from the tag.  Collecting information about the engineering building 3.  Building the web pages for every element.  Building the HTTP server.  Integrate the whole system.

Specific Applications  Power Saving  Meeting Room Allocation

CONCLUSION  A virtual voyage throughout the Engineering Building #3.  Anticipate the needs of the building users to provide improved comfort, greater user control, and better energy efficiency.  Robust and Flexible for further enhancements  User-friendly system

 This Project could be extended to all the Buildings in the NCTU campus.  The performance and efficiency could be enhanced by using High quality RFID devices and advanced readers.  Using PDA’s instead of laptops and could be a more compact version FUTURE ENHANCEMENTS

Related Work  1-A Tree Tour with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) Sean Hoyt, Doug St. John, Denise Wilson and Linda Bushnell - A popular tree tour at the University of Washington campus -Using RFID and PDA to view information about trees.

…Related Work  Plant Scanner: A Handheld PDA using RFID TAGS for Child Visitors to the MICHIGAN 4-H Children’s Garden Aparna Rajan Ramchandran -Using interactive handheld and RFID in the Indoor 4-H Children ’ s Garden at Michigan State University. -teach children introductory plant biology and enhance their exploration of the Indoor 4-H Children ’ s Garden.
