About fifteen students graduate each year with a major in computer science and many more minor in computer science or take several courses of interest. All students take a seminar on the state-of-the-art of a topic in computer science such as computer architecture, machine vision, parallel processing, robotics, and digital sound and music processing. Students may minor in computer science as well. A self-designed minor is an option, as are minors in digital art, digital music, theory, programming, systems, computer science and language, and mathematical foundations of computer science. Clark Science Center The latter three pieces of equipment are housed in the science center's Center for Design and Fabrication, a college-wide resource used by artists and scientists alike. The Clark Science Center supports faculty and student research and classwork with a cluster of multi- processor Intel servers. Key-served applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; Macromedia Dreamweaver; Matlab and Mathematica; Final Cut Pro; Flash and Sketch up are available, as are applications such as QT and python for advanced programming; Keykit, Csound, and Pure Data for computer sound and music; and OpenGL, GameMaker, and POV- Ray, for computer graphics. Learn more at www.cs.smith.edu. Facilities Computer Science contains and shares assorted computer- equipped classrooms in the science center. Machines include dual boot linux/windows workstations as well as triple boot Macintosh computers. Students and faculty members pursue interdisciplinary research and class work using digital circuits and microprocessor kits; Lego robot arms; robot dogs, and mobile platforms; sensor modules, synthesizers, keyboards, for digital sound and music; a digital video camera and a Gypsy 3.0 wireless model motion capture system; and Students Computer Science students are very active in the department. Two liaisons attend department faculty meetings, and run monthly social gatherings such as movie night and game night. Many students work as teaching assistants, running help sessions, grading, and aiding students during teaching labs. Many students also do research as special studies, as research grant assistants, or as honors theses. a 3-D printer, a laser scanner and a laser cutter for rapid prototyping.
