Explain why surgeons may have to create stoma

6. What is a Stoma? Introduction
During some surgical procedures involving the bowels, surgeons may have to create a stoma in order to release the load on the bowels either for a limited period of time (temporary ostomy) or permanently (definitive ostomy).
A colostomy might be performed due to:
- Cancer
- Diverticulitis
- Obstructed Anus
- Hirschsprung disease
- Trauma to the affected area
An ileostomy might be performed due to:

9. Definition of a Hernia Definitions *
Hernia: Protrusion or projection of an organ or part of an organ through the wall of the cavity that normally contains it.
Parastomal hernia: An incisional hernia at the site or in the vicinity of a stoma.
Herniation around a colostomy site has been long recognized as a complication of this surgery. *Approximately % of patients with a stoma will present with a herniation at the site.
