3 A little background Slavic = The Slavic peoples are a linguistic and ethnic branch of Indo-European peoples. 8 C yril adapts the Greek alphabet to Slavic languages. (Cyrillic Alphabet) Byzantine monks traditionally spread Christianity. Most famous was Cyril, traveled Slavic regions of Eastern Europe. Gained followers and made major contribution of Cyrillic alphabet. Most Slavs were illiterate so he designed an alphabet based on Greek and their language. Cyrillic alphabet – based loosely on Greek alphabet; still used in parts of Europe.

12 The end of the Byzantine Empire Byzantine Empire continues until Ottomans (Turks) sack Constantinople in 1453. Byzantine culture is prominate throughout Eastern Europe and Russia.

13 Reflection After learning about the Byzantine impact on Russia and Eastern Europe, why is it important the culture was spread to Russia and Eastern Europe?
