5 British Airways is the worlds largest international airlines. BA has one of the largest fleets in Europe consisting of 340 planes. BA is one of two airlines that has Concordes in its fleet. BA has 535 destinations in 160 countries all over the world. In the 2000 over 48 million people choose to fly on the 530,000 flights that it operated.

7 British Airways plays an important role in its country’s economy. They fly most of the domestic flights in the United Kingdom.

8 The forerunner company, Aircraft Transport and Travel Limited, started in August of 1919. In 1935 small airlines merged and became British Airways Limited. In 1939 British Airways was nationalized by the Government. British Airways has been scheduling international passenger & cargo services since 1946. In 1979 the government started to sell its share in British Airways to overcome a deficit. In 1987 British Airways was completely privatized.

9 British Airways wants to form Global Alliance with other airlines. This will increase their income by offering more destinations for flyers. Oneworld Alliance. 12 EMPLOYEES The motivation and commitment of employees is the key to success of British Airways. British Airways promotes equal opportunity employment in all areas. About 65,000 persons were employed by British Airways and its Affiliates. British Airways encourage employee ownership in the Company. 66% of the British Airway’s employees own 3.4% of the company’s shares. (as of January 2001).

13 NEW STRATEGY To reduce exposure to unprofitable markets. To strengthen our position in profitable markets. This new strategy is supported by investment that will improve comfort and service to restore competitive edge.

14 Changes in Fleet Deployment Cancellation of the worst performing routes. Focus more on core business routes. Better co-ordination with affiliates (CityFlyer). Focus on changing fleet to more efficient aircraft (replace 747 with smaller 777). More seats at the same unit cost. Boeing 777

26 British Airway is continually trying to trim costs, expand their markets, and improve services. Therefore this is a good company that could experience growth in the future.
