Using Multiplication and Division Properties Math Methods

Properties It is important to remember that when discussing properties that they are useful, but that certain terms or definitions do not need to be memorized.

The Order Property of Multiplication The order of the numbers in multiplication problems doesn’t make a difference. This is called the Order or Commutative Property Example: 3x4=12 same as 4x3=12

The Role of Zero and One in Multiplication Zero, and sometimes one, as factors cause difficulty for children learning multiplication. Why? Explain this in your notes.

What to do about 0 and 1 as factors… Rules, not reasons and certainly not understanding at first, are how they are most remembered How can one explain how many grams of fat there are in 7 servings of celery, when each serving has 0 grams of fat? (Don’t you wish this was chocolate?!!?) Give an explanation for this in your notes.

The Distributive Property One of two factors in a product can be split into two or more parts and each part multiplied and then added. 6x9 is the same as… (6x5) + (6x4), but why? Explain this in your notes!

Why Not Division by Zero? Why can’t we do this? Many students are simply told that they can’t, but not given an explanation or demonstration as to why this doesn’t work. The modeling of problems is the best way to show this: EXAMPLES: Take thirty counters. How many sets of zero can be made? Put 12 blocks in 0 equal groups. How many are in each group?

Division Game Go to the Rectangle Division Game: http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/frames_asid_193_g_2_t_1.h tmlhttp://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/frames_asid_193_g_2_t_1.h tml Make sure you watch how they show children how to figure out and understand division, esp when there is a remainder. Visit both the Show Me and Test Me part of the Game

WEB Activity After you visit the Rectangle Division Game, go to http://wps.ablongman.com/ab_vandewalle_math_6/54/138 60/3548160.cw/index.htmlhttp://wps.ablongman.com/ab_vandewalle_math_6/54/138 60/3548160.cw/index.html and answer the 2 questions on this page. Then have your score sent to kbird@gbs.edu when you are given this screen:kbird@gbs.edu

Expanded Lesson for 10.5 http://wps.ablongman.com/wps/media/objects/3464/3547873/ expanded_lessons/EL10.pdf Read the lesson plan idea at that site. Then in your class notes, explain WHICH math National Standards are being met in the lesson by writing the standard and which part of the lesson meets that standard. Standards can be found at: http://standards.nctm.org/document/appendix/numb.htm http://standards.nctm.org/document/appendix/numb.htm

Summary of the Chapter Go to this link for a summary of Developing Meaning for the Operations of Whole Numbers http://wps.ablongman.com/ab_vandewalle_math_6/54/1 3860/3548160.cw/index.htmlhttp://wps.ablongman.com/ab_vandewalle_math_6/54/1 3860/3548160.cw/index.html Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division You might want to remember this link to review for the test on March 27.
