10
10 A wind turbine obtains its power input by converting the force of the wind into a torque acting on the rotor blades The amount of energy which the wind transfers to the rotor depends - on the density of the air - the rotor area - and the wind speed. In other words you can get more energy: - the "heavier" the air - the “bigger” the rotor - the “higher” the wind speed How does it work

14
14 12 Steps to install a wind farm 1. WIND ASSESSMENT... available wind data will be used to estimate how much energy the wind farm will produce. 2. WIND FARM DESIGN Wind data combined with topographical information to design the wind farm..... to model wind flow,... turbine performance... sound levels... to optimize the location of WTG... design the access roads... turbine foundations... local electric network... grid connection
15
15 3. ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY... to identify any impacts on landscape, plants and wildlife, soil and water, land use, aviation, telecommunications, etc. 4. LAND ACQUISITION... to negotiate “option” agreements to use land 5. PERMITTING AND PUBLIC CONSULTATION... seek municipal, provincial and federal permits before the project can go ahead.... meet the local communities to present the project, solicit their feedback and seek community support. 12 Steps to install a wind farm
16
16 6. ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL ANALYSIS … demonstration of the economic viability of the project to raise the funds … estimate the cost of turbines and their installation, as well as roads, electrical system, operation and maintenance, etc.... estimate the income by using the energy production of the wind farm over the lifetime of the project 7. MANUFACTURING WTG parts are manufactured and pre-assembled into the main components at the factory and shipped to the wind farm site where the final assembly will take place. 12 Steps to install a wind farm
17
17 8. SITE PREPARATION The wind farm site will be prepared before the WTG will arrive to site.... access roads, clear the areas where turbines will be erected... preparation of the foundations (do the excavating; installing the formworks; pouring concrete) 9. CONSTRUCTION After arrival of all components, the assembly can take place by using a crane to erect the tower and install the nacelle and rotor with its hub and blades. Same time the electrical works will be performed 12 Steps to install a wind farm
18
18 10. COMMISSIONING The wind farm will tested before becoming fully operational. 11. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE A variety of skill sets are required to ensure the effective operation of a Wind Farm (activities be performed on a regular basis throughout the project’s, monitoring and analyzing performance, performing preventive maintenance and repairs on the turbines) 12. ….. 12 Steps to install a wind farm visit Hall 1 – A36

22
22 Compliance with the site wind conditions Specific costs (e. g. costs per kWh) Readiness of supplier to offer turbines Commitment to the market Delivery time Warranties: power curve, availability, grid compliance Completeness of technical documentation Track record of WTG model Company: position in market, financial strength, etc. Operation and Maintenance concept Crane availability Selection Criteria for Wind Turbines
23
23 Different size of WTGs / Cost per kW WTG: 1MW, 70m hub WTG: 2MW, 100m hub

24 Large wind farm vs. smal wind farm Source: www.awea.org
25
25 Selection Criteria for Wind Turbines Availability of 400t cranes is higher than 600t WTG <2MW should be selected for Pakistan
