Introduction and background Survey findings Conclusions and recommendations Q + A Presentation Outline

Introduction and Background This survey sought to provide insight into The prevalence of sharing instructional materials The type of resources that are being shared and the means by which items are being shared. Motives for sharing

Background - Centralized Initiatives PRIMO [primodb.org] LOEX [loex.org/resources.php] MERLOT [libraryandinformationservices.merlot.org/] JORUM [jorum.ac.uk]

Selected Works on Reuse Graham, N. & Secker, J. (2012). Librarians, information literacy, and open educational resources: Report of a survey. Dundon, A. M., Exton, C., & Diggins, Y. (2012). To Share or Not to Share: an insight into an academic community of practice. Allen, I.E., Seaman, J. (2014). Opening the Curriculum: Open educational resources in U.S. higher education.

Survey Findings

Findings materials via Web search, Google search (50%) Listserv (34%) Personal connections (26%) Libguides, articles, books (17% each) PRIMO, MERLOT (19%, 15%) *Participants were allowed to list more than one source

Survey Findings

Survey Findings Do you share your teaching materials with others?

Survey Findings Sharing with just colleagues at their institution: Email and shared drive / intranet rank highly followed by in-person sharing through informal conversation or resource sharing meetings

Survey Findings Sharing materials with both librarians at their institution as well as librarians at other institutions: Email, listservs, meetings rank highly followed by Libguides, conferences. Low use of MERLOT, PRIMO, and social media.

Survey Findings Type of materials shared -- Nearly identical for all of those who participated in the survey with the exception that those who share outside of their institution were more likely to share web- based tutorials.

Survey Findings Rationale for sharing Saving time, avoiding “reinventing the wheel” Exposure to new ideas The value of different viewpoints and working collectively

Survey Findings How can sharing be improved? No consensus amongst those who share with just colleagues at their institution A majority of those who share outside their institution referenced better use of a centralized, easy to find website

Survey Findings A vast majority (81%) of participants in the survey reported that efforts to share instructional materials with other librarians have either little or no impact in their job evaluation or tenure review.

Conclusions and Recommendations The resources that librarians surveyed were most interested in finding are: worksheets lesson plans web-based tutorials... which indicates that sharing these types of materials is most likely to lead to reuse.

Acknowledging sharing efforts in job evaluations / tenure reviews “As a profession, the more that sharing is seen as being valuable in the evaluation sphere the more we'll feel empowered and encouraged to share. Some may rightly feel more pressure to highlight original works than remixed or reused works. We need to deal with this and develop new values around valuing reusing and sharing.”

Conclusions and Recommendations Increase ease of adding to centralized resources like PRIMO Librarians should take proactive approach to sharing via resources like listservs, shared content is appreciated and used Posting learning materials on open web has an impact – librarians are searching for content broadly Facilitating sharing via Creative Commons license, descriptive wording / metadata, strong contextual info for lesson plans / worksheets
