Return to your lab groups from last class period. When you are done writing your “Antiseptic Comparison Lab” conclusion, write down the organization (from cell to organism) as best you can. Use Chapter 5 to help you! Welcome!

Cells: The smallest unit of life Two Types of Cells: 1.Prokaryotic 1.Prokaryotic: Cells that do not have a nucleus or organelles 2.Eukaryotic 2.Eukaryotic: Cells that contain a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles Two examples: Plant and Animal cells

Specialized Cells Cell Differentiation takes place soon after fertilization.

Tissues: A collection of cells that perform a specific function Four Types of Tissues: 1.Connective a)Structure: Has an extensive extracellular matrix b)Function: To support, bind, and protect organs c)Examples: Bone, blood, cartilage, collagen, adipose (fat)

Tissues: A collection of cells that perform a specific function Four Types of Tissues: 2.Epithelial a)Structure: Tightly packed cells b)Function: To cover all of the linings of the body c)Examples: Skin cells, lining of internal organs

Tissues: A collection of cells that perform a specific function Four Types of Tissues: 3.Nervous a)Structure: Long and slender neurons (specialized cells) b)Function: Coordinates the movements of muscles; Senses things; initiates actions c)Examples: Neurons

Tissues: A collection of cells that perform a specific function Four Types of Tissues: 4.Muscular a)Structure: Two types: Striated and Smooth b)Function: To produce force and cause motion c)Examples: Cardiac, Skeletal and Smooth Muscle (lining the digestive system)

Organs: A group of tissues which perform some function What are some major organs that you can think of? Brain, lungs, heart, kidneys, eye, stomach, spleen, pancreas, liver, intestines, skin, uterus, bladder… What types of tissues do you think go into making these organs?

Organ Systems: A group of organs and their associated tissues In your notes, start a table with three columns, with the titles: Organ SystemOrgan System Main ComponentsMain Components Main Functions

Digestive System Main Components: Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas and anusMain Components: Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas and anus Main Functions: Food processing (ingestion, digestion, absorption and elimination)

Circulatory System Main Components: Heart, blood vessels, bloodMain Components: Heart, blood vessels, blood Main Functions: Internal Distribution of materials

Respiratory System Main Components: Lungs, trachea, other breathing tubesMain Components: Lungs, trachea, other breathing tubes Main Functions: Gas exchange (input of Oxygen and output of Carbon Dioxide)

Immune and Lymphatic System Main Components: Bone marrow, Lymph nodes, thymus, spleen, lymph vessels, white blood cellsMain Components: Bone marrow, Lymph nodes, thymus, spleen, lymph vessels, white blood cells Main Functions: Body defense (fighting infections and cancer)

Excretory System Main Components: Kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethraMain Components: Kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra Main Functions: Disposal of metabolic waste; Maintaining the osmotic regularity of blood

Endocrine System Main Components: Pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, other hormone secreting glandsMain Components: Pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, other hormone secreting glands Main Functions: Coordination of body activities (i.e., digestion and metabolism)

Reproductive System Main Components: Ovaries, testes and associated organsMain Components: Ovaries, testes and associated organs Main Functions: Reproduction

Integumentary System Main Components: Skin and its derivatives (i.e., hair, claws, skin glands)Main Components: Skin and its derivatives (i.e., hair, claws, skin glands) Main Functions: Protection against mechanical injury, infection and drying out

Skeletal System Main Components: Skeleton: Bones, tendons, ligaments and cartilageMain Components: Skeleton: Bones, tendons, ligaments and cartilage Main Functions: Body support and protection of internal organs

Muscular System Main Components: Skeletal MusclesMain Components: Skeletal Muscles Main Functions: Movement and locomotion

Nervous System Main Components: Brain, spinal cord, nerves and sensory organsMain Components: Brain, spinal cord, nerves and sensory organs Main Functions: Coordination of body activities, detection of stimuli and formation of responses to them

Organ System Activity In groups, you will be assigned an organ system to draw on the model provided. Each of you will have a role: –Researcher –Recorder –Artist/Decorator You will be graded as a group and as an individual.

Organ System Activity You must draw and label the major organs of the system. You must list the major functions of the system.
