1 Get Ready for Test Corrections Read BELOW:
NO SET UP PAGE If you have not taken the test stand by the exit door Take out a different colored pen Do not fill out the TOTAL CORRECT column After corrections we will do test corrections AND input grades

2 Announcements Homework: Mini Quiz: Mon/Tues
Flashcards Due: Next Th/Fri Practice Questions- need to access on class website- Pg. 38 Anatomy: Lesson 68- Spinal Cord HW Questions-2/13-2/14 Mini Quiz: Mon/Tues Spinal Cord Divisions of the Nervous System (we’ll learn that day)

3 Total Correct Column

4 Test Corrections and Fill out your Learning Log - Pg. 35
I got #_____ wrong because I thought ____. ____ is the correct answer because_____. ** Do 5 total. If you got less than 5 wrong then justify 5 of your answers explaining why they are the correct answer.

5 Mini Investigation: Pg. 35
Go to class website Open up the document: Anatomy: Lesson 68- Mini Investigation-2/13-2/14 Answer the questions on pg. 35

6 Explain the anatomy and physiology of the spinal cord
Explain the anatomy and physiology of the spinal cord. Predict the consequences of spinal cord injuries.

7 Investigation: 5 Case Studies- Pg. 38
Directions Expectations Read each case card. Record on your Doctor Notebook. Use the “Spinal Cord Responsibilities” sheet to make a hypothesis: where was this person injured? Answer the analysis questions. Stay in your seats Work as a team  Voices

12 Learning New Material One person speaks at a time
Expectations One person speaks at a time Think and write actively You are a professional student!

13 What is the physiology of the spinal cord?
Communicates between brain and the rest of the body AKA connection between brain and peripheral nervous system Can independently control some basic reflexes

14 How do you think the spinal cord is protected?
Guess 1 Guess 2

15 How is the spinal cord protected?
1. 33 bones called vertebrae, stacked on top of each other and separated by discs 2. 3 layers of tissue called meninges

16 How is the spinal cord protected?
3. Surrounded by Cerebrospinal Spinal Fluid (CSF), which provides support and nutrients

17 How is the spinal cord divided
sections of the spinal cord cervical thoracic lumbar sacral

18 What can go wrong with the spinal cord?
Tetraplegia or quadriplegia is paralysis of the arms and legs This involves both sensory and motor deficits Caused by damage to spinal cord at a high level (C1 – C7) Paraplegia is paralysis of the legs Damage to any vertebrae below c7

19 Go Back to the Spinal Cord Diagram: What do the different sections of the spinal cord do?
Cervical- Thoracic- Lumbar- Sacral-

20 Cervical- sustains vitals (breathing, heart rate) and upper body movement
Thoracic- movement of the trunk Lumbar- movement of legs Sacral- genital functioning, bowel and bladder activity

21 Spinal Cord Dissection

22 Check for Understanding: What’s wrong?
Directions: Label the section of the spinal cord. Cervical Thoracic Sacral Lumbar

23 Check for Understanding: What’s wrong?
A young man has suffered a spinal cord injury and is having difficulty breathing. He cannot feel or move his legs, meaning he may be quadriplegic. Where is he most likely injured? C4 T11 L2 S1 Because the lumbar section of the spinal cord has to do with legs

24 Check for Understanding: What’s wrong?
(Level 4) What does it mean to be quadriplegic? Quadriplegic means that you are paralyzed (can’t feel or move) from the waist down. Both legs don’t work.

25 Check for Understanding: What’s wrong?
(Level 4) How is the spinal cord protected? The spinal cord is protected only by the vertebrae, or the muscles.

26 Let’s Practice: Practice Questions- Pg. 37

27 Homework Assignment Pg. 38
Go to the anatomy class website Go to the document: Anatoly: Lesson 68- Homework Spinal Cord Questions-2/13-2/14 Due: Monday/Tuesday
