CCSS draws the distinction…Argument relies on logic to convince the audience of the …merit and reasonableness of the claim and proof offered rather than on emotion Teach logos, ethos, and pathos and the differences therein Teach refutation/debate …look for examples in articles (Leading Issues/My Analysis), PQ Debate Model Teach students to gather and use evidence (Graphic Notecards)

Increase Text Complexity Choose texts at the appropriate level with a combination of qualitative and quantitative measures (Lexiles) Average 11 th -12 th grade text is at Lexile 1090 while post secondary Freshmen and Sophomore and the workplace expectation is 1355! (Metametrics) Discourage “spoon feeding” or excessive summarizing by the teacher to allow for discovery Provide Multiple sources on the same topic to help students encounter texts at a variety of levels Use both current and historical perspectives (PQ Newspapers) to add context and understanding
