6 Ahaziah Sends… Focus on Israel 2 Kings 1
Ahaziah king of Israel the son of Ahab

7 For Baal-zebub In Ekron (2 Kings 1:1-8)
Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron (1) “Lord of the flies” or “Fly god” By the time of Jesus: Beelzebub—”Lord of the dung” Elijah is sent to tell the messengers (3-4) Is there no God in Israel? What’d he look like?!(7-8) Sent to a Philistine city, to a foreign god “lord of the flies” later will be called by the Jews Beelzebub “lord of the dung” (Matt. 10:25) to show the disdain for this god. Unfortunately, they associated Jesus the Lord of all with it  Evidence had been given of the Lord being God (1 Kings 18:39,20:13,28) John the Baptist is dressed similarly to Elijah (Matthew 3:4)

8 For Elijah (2 Kings 1:9-16) Captains address, “O man of God” (9,11,13)
17 So Ahaziah died according to the word of the LORD which Elijah had spoken. And because he had no son, Jehoram became king in his place… For Elijah (2 Kings 1:9-16) Captains address, “O man of God” (9,11,13) Elijah’s answer to the first two (10,12 cf. Luke 9:51-56) “If I am a man of God let fire come down from heaven…” Why does He go with the third captain? (13-15) Humility of the captain The angel of the Lord directed him Remember James and John (Luke 9:51-56) wanting to do the same to the Samaritan villages that rejected Jesus. Does Elijah’s message change when before the king? No, he consistently speaks thus says the Lord 16 Then he said to him, "Thus says the LORD, 'Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron—is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of His word?—therefore you shall not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but shall surely die.'” - 2 Kings 16:17 NASB-

9 Applications 2013 Hymn: “Where could I go, but to the Lord?”

10 Ahaziah dies and Joram begins to reign in Israel

12 The city in which Israel camped before attacking Jericho.

13 Most likely the location of this Gilgal also known as Jiljiliya
In the mountains There are as many as 4 different Gilgal in the Bible.

14 Sons of the prophets at ___ to Elisha:
Elijah to Elisha: “Stay here…___” Elisha to Elijah: “…I will not leave you” Sons of the prophets at ___ to Elisha: “…the Lord will take your master from over you today” Elisha to the sons of the prophets ___: “Yes, I know; be still.” We can conclude that the Lord had told: Elijah, Elisha and the sons of the prophets what would happen There MIGHT be some significance to the reverse trip of the Conquest of Israel lead by Joshua, but I’m not sure about that

15 What’s the double portion of Elijah’s spirit? (Deut 21:17)
Only God not Elijah could grant this Most likely: firstborn, preeminent of the prophets
