What to expect after delivery… Immediately after delivery the baby will be cleaned, measured, and assessed. If the baby is breathing well, you can choose to have the baby on your belly immediately after birth We will encourage you to breastfeed as soon as possible.

Mom You can walk as soon as you want to Eat/drink immediately Pain medicine is given automatically and then as needed Nursing staff rearranges the room and gets you and baby settled. We then try to facilitate some family time. What to expect after delivery…

Dad: Take pictures (or ask staff to as we like to do this) Assist mom with breastfeeding Hold baby while nurses are caring for mom Assist mom with walking/shower Call all the family! First 12 hours or so… Mom Cares: Vital signs every 4hrs with fundal checks Walk, shower, and eat (if desired) Bond and love on your new baby REST, REST, REST…it seems family starts to stream in so rest while you can Don’t wait too long for pain medication Learn about newborn cares

First 12hrs or so Baby: Bath Feeding Diapering Hearing Screen

12-24hrs after delivery Mom: Shower, walk, rest Complete the birth certificate Manage pain Complete any other paperwork, discharge instructions Car seat installation and safety review Watch education videos Review newborn care and self care education Special meal

12-24hrs after delivery Baby Circumcision Hepatitis B Vaccination Hearing Screen Newborn Screening test Newborn gifts Newborn education completed…parents feel comfortable with care Cord clamp removed

Going Home Ask for help at least the 1 st week (great to have both parents home) Rest/sleep when the baby sleeps Eat a healthy balanced diet If breastfeeding, increase your fluid and caloric intake Exercise will help you lose the baby weight Follow up appointment in 2-3 days and then in 7-10 days

Going Home The reality of being a parent is harder than the dream of having a child. Most times there is emotional letdown after discharge Talk openly about it Ask for help Take care of yourself and your significant other Talk with other new parents for support Watch for postpartum depression and report it to your provider
