What I learned this year? By Amanda Ferrara
2
I learned how to deal with decimals. There is the tenths place, the hundredths place, the thousandths place, and the ten thousandths place.
3
In writing I learned how to write similes. A simile can have as blank as in it or like in it. An example of one is he was as hard as a rock. In writing we learned about metaphors too. A metaphor does not have like or as blank as in it. It has is in it.
4
In reading class, we are learning about point of view and author’s purpose. The authors purpose can be to entertain, persuade, inform. Point of view is how the author felt about parts of what he/she wrote. If you read something that says someone loved dogs, then the author probably wrote about that because they like dogs.
5
In Social Studies, we have been learning about the Lenape. The Lenape is a Native American tribe. There are 2 other tribes called the Munsee and Unami. Those tribes would either live in longhouses or wigwams.
6
In science we have been learning about circuits. There is a short circuit, a series circuit, a parallel circuit, an open circuit, and a closed circuit. An open circuit has gaps and breaks. A series circuit has two light bulbs in a single path. Either both light bulbs light up or none at all.
7
In reading class, we just started reading The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. There are four kids named Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter. Lucy is the youngest. However, Edmund is the second youngest. Even the first chapter is interesting.
8
In math, we learned about fractions. You can add or subtract fractions. When you add 2 fractions that have the same denominator you leave it the same and add only the top 2 numbers.
9
In science, we have learned about magnets. A magnet that can turn on and off by current electricity is called an electromagnet. There are big magnets and small magnets. There are even magnets that you can’t pull off of their platform. My opinion is that magnets are very cool.
10
In math class, we learned about percent. If the fraction was 7 over 10 then the percent would be 70%. If the fraction was 70 over 100 the numerator would stay the same so the percent would be 70%. If it is a different fraction then it is a different percent.
11
In Social Studies, we learned about the French and Indian War. Taxes went up when this war started because they needed money to pay for the weapons used during the war. The British won The French and Indian War.
12
In writing we recently finished our research reports. I did Marie Curie. She is very interesting. Marie studied Radioactivity and she helped with making medicine. She made x-rays too. Marie won 2 Nobel Prizes. [cool]
13
In writing, we learned about and how to do poems. The second and fourth line of a poem should rhyme. Your poem can be however long you want but I prefer to have my poems 6 to 8 stanzas.
14
In writing we learned about Haiku’s. Haiku’s never rhyme. Haiku’s are 3 lines. For the syllable pattern it is 5, 7, 5. For me Haiku’s are fun to do. I did 5 in 1 day.
15
The book we have been reading in class is called Mrs.Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. It is about a lady widow mouse who’s son has pneumonia. They have to move again so some rats move her house so it does not get run over. They move it and Timothy is safe again.
16
The Asian Tiger Mosquito is fun to learn about. The mosquito fish will eat mosquitoes [larva]. It is the predator of the mosquito. Mosquitoes are cool.
