Tea The Emperor will only take silver & gold for his tea. The British brought gifts for him but he still said NO.

Opium The British realized there was a big market for opium in China. They used India to produce opium. Then they smuggled it into China to trade for silver. With the silver they paid china for the tea. (the picture on the left is an opium junk trader)

The Africans used to take other people from other tribes to trade for beads and jewellery, but the slaves will eventually have freedom. when the Europeans came they bought slaves but they never had any freedom.

Slaves for Sale Traders paid little attention to the slaves during the middle passage. By the 17th century slaves could be bought in Africa for about $25. They sold in the Americas for about $150. After the slave-trade was declared illegal, prices went much higher. With a death-rate of 50 per cent, merchants could expect to make huge profits.

What we think BAD They tricked China by giving them their own Chinese silver. They smuggled illegal opium in to China The tea was like an identity to China, and the British should have not taken it. The British took part in slavery. GOOD We would not have tea,sugar or rum today if the British had not taken part in slavery and opium.
