Earth’s Relationship with the sun Lesson 26
2
We have learned that the sun provides the Earth with light, heat and energy.
3
The Earth needs the sun.
4
We also know that it takes the Earth 365 days or one year to travel all the way around the Sun.
5
What are the seasons?
6
But did you know that the Earth and the sun effect the seasons?
7
Seasons: one of the four periods of the year
8
Listen as I read a book about how the sun and the Earth make the seasons.
9
The seasons are created because the Earth is tilted.
10
This short video shows us the Earth’s tilt as it travels around the sun.
11
When part of the Earth is tilted away from the sun that part of the Earth is experiencing winter.
summer
12
During the winter the temperature is much colder
During the winter the temperature is much colder. The sun is not giving as much heat.
13
Also during the winter the days are shorter
Also during the winter the days are shorter. There is less light reaching those parts of the Earth. winter winter
14
When part of the Earth is tilted towards the sun that part of the Earth is experiencing summer.
15
During the summer the temperature is much warmer
During the summer the temperature is much warmer. The sun is giving off a lot of heat.
16
Also during the summer the days are longer
Also during the summer the days are longer. There is more light reaching those parts of the Earth.
17
Here is an image of the Earth traveling around the Sun
Here is an image of the Earth traveling around the Sun. See how the Earth is angled.
18
In the spring the Earth is moving around the sun, and the tilted part is slowly starting to face the sun.
19
The Earth in that part of the world is warming and the days are growing longer.
Plants start to grow.
20
In the Autumn or Fall the Earth is moving around the sun, and the tilted part is slowly starting to face away from the sun.
21
The Earth in that part of the world is slowly getting colder and the days are growing shorter.
Plants start to die.
22
Here is another short video to show us the Earth’s tilt as it travels around the sun.
23
This is how the Sun sees the Earth during the year as the Earth travels around the Sun.

Now let’s look at the worksheet, The Earth
Now let’s look at the worksheet, The Earth. I will read the questions for you. After you finish answering the questions we can go over the answers together.
26
Today we learned that the way the Earth tilts towards or away from the sun creates the seasons on Earth.
27
In our next lesson we are going to learn about the planets in our solar system.
28
Keep observing the world around you!
