Unit 4, Day 1 Genetics & Human Development T/W, Jan. 15 th -16 th (Block, 115 Min)
2
Homework Due Today (0 min) Meiosis YouTube Video Notes and Problems
3
Daily Question (4 min) If you had to get rid of one of these body systems, which one would it be and why? Practice using complete sentences Don’t forget to justify! ▫I would remove _________ because _________ and _________. Circulatory ▫heart and blood Digestive ▫stomach, intestines Integumentary ▫skin, hair, nails Musculoskeletal ▫muscles and bones Nervous ▫brain, spinal cord, nerves Reproductive ▫genitals Respiratory ▫lungs
4
Guess what? (1 min) The reproductive system is the only body system that is not essential to your survival. It is however necessary for the continuation of the species.
5
Reminders (1 min) Electronic Devices: I see it, I take it. Student Movement: Assigned seat at all times. Irrelevant Errand Pass: One person at a time. Hall Passes: 3 passes with permission. No pass, no leaving (unless bleeding profusely) End of Day: don’t pack up until told, empty trash, table entirely clean, everyone seated in assigned seat, not dismissed until told. Stamps: important for binder checks. Homework = SUCCESS
6
Homework CFU (1 min) Question #1 – How many chromosomes did you receive from each parent? Question #2 – Why is it important that chromosomes undergo replication to form sister chromatids?
7
Homework CFU (1 min) Question #3 – How many cells result from Meiosis I? Indicate the number of chromosomes (n or 2n) in each of the cells and whether or not the chromosomes contain sister chromatids. Question #4 - How many cells result from Meiosis II? Indicate the number of chromosomes (n or 2n) in Meiosis II and whether or not the chromosomes contain sister chromatids.
8
Box Today’s Objectives (2 min) 2.1.A (Meiosis) ▫I can describe each phase of mitosis and how it is an early step in sexual reproduction in which pairs of chromosomes separate and segregate randomly during cell division to produce gametes containing one chromosome of each type. 2.1.B (Fertilization) ▫I can describe how new combinations of alleles may be generated in a zygote through the fusion of male and female gametes.
9
Hook – Meiosis Matching Competition (5 min) Match pictures to labels You may use your notes! Pairs at tables versus each other. ▫(3 people? Pair vs Individual) ▫(2 people? Individual vs Individual) Winners get the starbursts :D
10
Investigation Before Explanation (5 min) Pairs work together Definitions ▫Sexual Reproduction Two organisms (male and female), unique offspring ▫Asexual Reproduction One organism, identical offspring, quicer Who reproduces using sex? Put each organism into a pile: sexual or asexual How’d you do? Flip over
11
Teacher Notes – Fertilization (3 min) Sex = Variation Fertilization: ▫Sperm + Ovum = Zygote Sperm = male gamete Ovum = female gamete Zygote = first cell of human Example. Smell = Attraction (Immune System Variation = Stronger Children)
12
Student Practice – Fertilization (3 min) Write down in a way that you can remember the question!! 1.Gamete is a __________ cell. 2.Haploid human cell = __ chromosomes. Example is a _________. 3.A diploid human cell = __ chromosomes. Example is a ________.
13
Teacher Notes – Fertilization (more depth in next homework) (3 min) n=23 egg sperm n=23 2n=46 zygote
14
Student Practice – Fertilization (3 min) 1.A gamete contains 3 chromosomes: a)The haploid number is ___. b)The diploid number is ___. 2.A zygote contains 8 chromosomes: a)The haploid number is ___. b)The diploid number is ___.
15
Teacher Notes = Spermatogenesis (4 min) Start = primary spermatocyte. Meiosis I Secondary spermatocytes. Meiosis II spermatids. Mature to sperm cells
16
Student Practice – Spermatogenesis (4 min) 1.Spermatogenesis makes __ sperm. 2.A sperm has ___ chromosomes so it is a ______ cell. 3.After Meiosis I. Each cell has (n / 2n) chromosomes and they (do / do not) have sister chromatids. 4.After Meiosis II. Each cell has (n / 2n) chromosomes and they (do / do not) have sister chromatids
17
Teacher Notes – Oogenesis (4 min) Start = primary oocyte Meiosis I 1 secondary oocyte and 1 st polar body Meiosis II 1 ovum and 3 polar bodies **Note: 1 st polar body splits = 2 polar bodies. Secondary oocyte splits = one ovum + one polar body.
18
Student Practice – Oogenesis (4 min) 1.Oogenesis makes __ ovum. 2.Oogenesis makes __ polar bodies. 3.An ovum has ___ chromosomes so it is a ______ cell.
19
Check for Understanding (1 min) How are you feeling? (1 through 10) ▫Circle at bottom of page ▫Show me (I will provide additional help during the lecture activity)
20
Lecture Activity (10 min) Putting it all together! Meiosis, Spermatogenesis, Oogenesis, Fertilization ▫Partner #1: Meiosis, Spermatogenesis, Fertilization ▫Partner #2: Meiosis, Oogenesis, Fertilization Include for all cells: “n” or “2n”, “yes sc” or “no sc” Include & label all vocab in box (plus some) You must be able to do this for your exam.
21
Project – Entry Event (5 min) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys4FEFphRYE
22
Project – Trial by Child (2 min) Genetics and Human Development Pairs = mother and father (different perspectives) “Egg” baby - Negative treatment results in CPS fine
23
Project: Deliverable #1 – Digital Scrapbook (4 min) Posts on digital portfolio. ▫8 sentences. ▫All eight stages: pregnancy to college. ▫Each does 1 post per stage (16 total): father or mother perspective. ▫Include “Life Events” that occur. Photos on digital portfolio. ▫6 photos (infancy to college) Each parent does 3 of the stages. ▫Photoshop or drawn. ▫Characteristics determined throughout genetics unit. ▫Unique and balanced: beautiful and flawed. Budget. ▫As a couple, track budget from pregnancy to college. ▫Include positive/negative “Life Events” that occur.
24
Project – Trial by Child (1 min) Child Protective Services ▫Negligent behavior towards “child” = a fine. Da Vinci teachers will be monitoring your behavior. Parents not with child, child abandoned, child mistreated = $$$
25
Project: Deliverable #2 – PSA and Informational Pamphlet (3 min) Create a 5 minute PSA. Post on YouTube, link to DP. Pamphlet will accompany it and will contain: ▫Teenage Pregnancy Info, Risks, Prevention, Resources, and Options Presented and handed out to other classes on February 4 th – 5 th (odd, even)
26
Don’t Panic (1 min) You will have work time to do these. However, I will give you suggestions for when you should have each post, each photo, the budget, the PSA, and the informational pamphlet finished and posted to your digital portfolio.
27
Project Activity (10 min) Partners - On “Project Activity Sheet” ▫Choose father and mother ▫Choose date you discovered pregnancy (2012) ▫Choose birthday - Add 8 mth 2 wks to 9 mth 2 wks Label egg (first and last name) ▫You have the same child, but to experience responsibility better, both of you have an “egg child”
28
Budget (5 min) Add Budget to Binder. ▫Table of Contents Extra Material Budget and Brochure_________page 43 Assumptions: ▫You as a couple start having saved 40$ ▫Part time job: 8$/hour after taxes Parent #1 - 5 hours/weekdays, 10 hours/weekends. Parent #2 - 5 hours/Friday,Saturday,Sunday ▫Yearly Salary = $24,960 + $40 Saving = $25,000
29
Pregnancy Stage (5 min) +$25,000 under “Money Saved + Earned” Fill out babysitting as -$3,900 ($5/hour) Life Event (Random) ▫Positive or Negative ▫Include in Budget (write down description) ▫Include in Post for Pregnancy Stage ▫This is where CPS fines are written down
30
Begin Writing Pregnancy Post (10 min) At least 8 sentences Unique to father/mother perspective Both need to have the same facts (example, how many weeks along are you?)
31
Learning Log (3 min) Read and rate 1-10 for the following objectives under Day 1: ▫Objective 2.1.A (Meiosis) ▫Objective 2.1.B (Fertilization)
32
Homework Due Th/F Jan 17 th -18 th (3 min) Write down homework in homework planner http://dp.davincischools.org/staff/blarkin “Biology Homework Spring ‘13” “Homework Due 1/17-18 Th/F” ▫Mendelian Genetics YouTube Video ▫Answer the 10 questions posted on your “Homework Sheet” Suggestion: Rough Draft of Pregnancy Post
33
End of Day Procedure (2 min) Don’t pack up until you are told to. ▫You will cause the rest of class to stay for as many minutes as you disrupt my lesson.
