May 1961 A military coup was led, putting General Park Chung-hee in power. Park led from 1961 to 1979

October 1979 General Park was assassinated on October 26 th, 1979 by Kim Jaegyu. General Chun Doo- hwan took his place. This was taken after he murdered Park.

June 2002 The battle between South Korean and North Korean naval vessels concludes in four South Koreans dead with 19 others wounded. Also, there are about 30 North Koreans who are thought to be killed in the same battle.

August 2004 The Yeongi-Kongju area was selected to replace Seoul as the new capital by 2030.
