Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/051 Programming and Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uA Training Module for Big Macks and Little Macks Little Mack Big Mack (newer version)

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/052 Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device uMost single message voice output devices in the classrooms can be identified as Big Macks (5 inches in size) or Little Macks (2 1/2 inches in size). They both come in a variety of surface and base colors and several different versions. Big Mack Little Mack

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/053 Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device uBig Macks (newer and older versions) and Little Macks require one 9V battery for operation. The battery compartment is located on the bottom of the device.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/054 Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device uTo begin programming one of these devices, find a quiet location free from background noises that may interfere with your recorded message.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/055 Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device uLocate the ON/OFF switch on the side or end of the device above a triangular shaped arrow. This switch also provides volume control. This is an older version of a Big Mack.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/056 Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device uHere is the On/Off switch on a newer version of the Big Mack.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/057 Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device uTurn the device on. Big Mack (newer version)

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/058 Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device uLocate a RECORD button on the end or side of the device.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/059 Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device uPress and continue to hold the RECORD button down while pressing down on the colored surface of the device.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0510 Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device uOn the older version of the Big Mack, locate the area on the end or side of the device near the RECORD button labeled either MIC or MICROPHONE. Speak your message into this location. Use a strong, clear voice for the recording.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0511 Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device uHere is the Microphone location for the newer version of the Big Mack.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0512 Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device uRelease the RECORD button and stop pressing down on the colored surface of the device. uPress down again on the colored surface of the device to activate the recorded message and check the quality of the recording. Use the on/off switch to adjust the volume.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0513 Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device uIf you are satisfied with the quality of your recorded message, you are now finished with the programming process. If your message is not satisfactory, repeat the steps for Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0514 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uA Big/Little Mack provides a one-touch, single message feature for a variety of uses. uThe device will play the entire recorded message regardless of repetitive hits.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0515 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uThe activation surface is relatively large (it varies from 2 1/2 inches for a Little Mack to 5 inches for a Big Mack) and is positioned on an angled base for easy activation.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0516 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uA clear, plastic snap cap may have been provided for your single message device. This provides a clear cover to protect photographs or picture symbols you have placed on top of the device to represent your recorded message.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0517 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uOnce your message has been recorded successfully, choose the photograph or picture symbol to represent your message and place it on the top surface of the device. If you have a snap cap, cover your photograph or picture symbol with the clear cap to protect it.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0518 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uThere are a variety of ways a single message device can be implemented into a classroom setting. uThe following slides provide suggestions for implementation:

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0519 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uDuring calendar time, the device can be programmed to say the day of the week, the current weather, or any statement that would give the student the opportunity to participate in the activity. uThe intent is not to replace verbal communication but to enhance it.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0520 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uDuring work activities, phrases such as “I’m finished” or “I need more” could be programmed to assist the student in communicating needs. uDuring table activities, the student could be required to ask for what is needed, such as a specific color or glue to complete the activity.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0521 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uDuring story time, a repetitive phrase from the story could be programmed on the device so the student could “say” the phrase when appropriate. For example, in the story of The Little Red Hen, the phrase “Not I” or “I will” could be programmed for the student so that they have an opportunity to participate.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0522 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uDuring group activities, conversational phrases such as “It’s my turn” or “You go now” could be programmed in an effort to further include the student in the activity. uThe device could also be used to make choices during a group activity.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0523 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uDuring motor activities, the student could be the person who begins the activity by programming phrases such as “On your mark, get set, go” on the single message voice output device. uDuring art activities, the student could make choices between colors or request specific items needed to complete activities.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0524 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uDuring musical activities, the chorus of a song being sung in class could be programmed so that the student could actively participate in the singing.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0525 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uThe pledge of allegiance or the pledge to the Texas flag could be programmed into the device to give the student the opportunity to actively participate with classmates in reciting the pledge.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0526 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uRecess would be a good time to record social phrases such as “Way to go” or “That’s awesome” so the student could have an opportunity to communicate with peers.

Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D 04/04/0527 Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device uThe variety of ways a single message voice output device can be implemented into your classroom is limitless. In addition to the suggestions provided, use your imagination to create new and unique ways to utilize one of these devices specific to your classroom and your students’ needs.
