SPS9 Students will investigate the properties of waves.

All electromagnetic waves travel at 300,000
Km/s in the vacuum of space. This is the Speed of light. Air --- slightly less than 300,000km/s Water ,000 km/s Glass ,000 km/s Diamond – 124,000 km/s

Photons depend on the frequency of the wave
not the amplitude (energy).

Objects can absorb light, reflect light, and
transmit light depending on the type of matter they are made of.

Opaque only absorbs light and reflects it.
The blue cup is an example of an opaque material.

material because it reflects light

Translucent materials allow some light to pass
through them. Which cup is translucent?

Transparent materials transmit almost all the light.
The clear plastic cup is transparent.

The Law of Reflection says that the angle of
Incidence always equals the angle of reflection.

Every material has an index of refraction, the larger the index, the greater the amount by which the speed of light is reduced.

Light as waves, photons, and rays!!

Copy: Virtual Image – your brain perceives an image even though no light rays pass through it. Your brain always perceives light rays as though they have traveled in a straight line.

Copy: Real Image is formed when light rays converge to form the image.

Virtual Images: Your brain thinks that the light
Rays that reflect off of the mirror come from a point behind the mirror.

Draw: Convex mirrors diverge light rays. Objects look closer than they truly are. Virtual Image

Convex Lens is thicker in the middle than at the edges.
Depending on the position of the lens and the object, the object may appear real or upside down.

Concave lens The image is always virtual, upright, and Smaller.

Summary: Light rays bounce off of mirrors and pass through lenses. Virtual and real images depend on the behavior of these light rays. Today, you should have been able to draw a concave and convex mirror draw a convex and concave lens explain the difference between a virtual and a real image.

Groups: Choice A Soft Blue Book page 212 Using the materials provided you, prepare a home interiors presentation on the following: The types of windows available for an upstairs bathroom. Based on the science of light, and the customers’ needs, explain which window works best under certain conditions.

Choice B You are making a presentation and teaching a class for Bass Pro Shop on the art of spear fishing. Be sure to discuss the behavior of light in different mediums and the index of refraction using the materials provided you.

Choice C You are teaching a 4th grade class on mirrors. Design a hands on activity using the materials provided for your students to learn about the laws of regular and diffused reflection. You might want to use a County Fair theme and make a fun house with different kinds of mirrors.
