Paragonimus westermani This lung fluke contains over 40 species and causes Paragonimiasis. Geographic Range –Asia, Oceania Distinguishing Facts –Adult resembles coffee beans

Paragonimus westermani Symptoms –Chest pain, cough, rusty sputum, elevated leukocyte levels, cysts in lungs Most serious illness is cerebral paragonimiasis, which can cause paralysis. Definitive Host –Any animal that eats crustaceans Intermediate Host –1 st = Snail –2 nd = Crustaceans (ex. Crabs)

Paragonimus westermani Diagnosis –Detection of eggs in feces, ELISA test, immunoblot for IgG antibody detection, CSF tests Treatment –Praziquantel (95% efficiency) Can cause headache, dizziness, gastrointestinal disturbances and blurred vision. –Triclabenazole Control –Cook crustaceans thoroughly and no raw boar meat!!!!!!!

Paragonimus kellicotti This lung fluke closely resembles Paragonimus westermani. Geographic range –North America East of the Rocky Mountains Symptoms –May be asymptomatic or respiratory symptoms

Paragonimus kellicotti Definitive Hosts –Cat, Dog, Raccoon, Opossum, Skunk, Mink, Muskrat, Bobcat, Pig, Goat, Red Fox, Coyote, and Weasel Intermediate Hosts –1 st = Pomatiopsis lapidaria (Snail) –2 nd = Crayfish

Paragonimus kellicotti Diagnosis –Lung biopsy & trans-tracheal wash Treatment –Praziquantel Control –Keep dogs leashed or yarded and keep cats indoors. Infected dogs and cats do not pose an infection risk to humans.
