Death Valley is a special place in the world. Why? Death Valley in California and Nevada is a desert that gets less than 50 millimetres (2 inches) of rain per year and is one of the hottest places on the earth. A temperature of 57°C (135°F) has been recorded here. Yet plants and animals manage to live in Death Valley, fed mainly by underground springs and a few streams. There are 40 species of plant and animal life here that exist nowhere else. Much of the desert is below sea level, including the lowest point in the United States, which is 86 metres (282 feet) below sea level. Describe New England. New England is the collective name given to the six states of the northeastern United States, namely, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The land rises in the north and west to the New England system of the Appalachian Mountains. The coast is the most important commercial area, although during the 20th century industry and tourism have largely superseded the traditionally important activities of fishing and shipbuilding. Many of the major events of America’s colonial period, including the start of the American War of Independence, took place in New England.
