Fire Danger Index Calculation of the index is based on a number of factors: Weather – drought (days since last rainfall), temperature, wind, relative humidity, soil moisture Fuels – build up of vegetation and fine fuels, fuel moisture Topography Risk of incidents – lightening strikes, human factors Severe50 to 74 Catastrophic - 100+ Low - 0 to 5 Moderate - 6 to 11 High - 12 to 24 Very high - 25 to 49 Catastrophic - 100+ Low to moderate - 0 to 11 High – 12- 24 Very high - 25 to 49 Catastrophic - 100+ Severe - 50 to 74 Extreme – 75 - 99

Fire Danger Index Severe50 to 74 Catastrophic - 100+ Low - 0 to 5 Moderate - 6 to 11 High - 12 to 24 Very high - 25 to 49 Catastrophic - 100+ Fires controllable by ground crews. Little risk to people and property. Catastrophic - 100+ Low to moderate - 0 to 11 High – 12- 24 Very high - 25 to 49 Catastrophic - 100+ Severe - 50 to 74 Extreme – 75 - 99

Fire Danger Index Catastrophic - 100+ Fire control difficult and often fails. People in the path of a fire are unlikely to be killed or seriously injured if they take shelter. Well-prepared and actively defended homes can offer safety during a fire. Catastrophic - 100+ Low to moderate - 0 to 11 High – 12- 24 Very high - 25 to 49 Catastrophic - 100+ Severe - 50 to 74 Extreme – 75 - 99

Fire Danger Index Catastrophic - 100+ Low to moderate - 0 to 11 High – 12- 24 Very high - 25 to 49 Catastrophic - 100+ Fire will spread rapidly and be difficult to control. There is a possibility that people in the path of a fire will be killed or seriously injured. Some homes may be destroyed. However, well-prepared and actively defended homes can offer safety during a fire. Severe - 50 to 74 Extreme – 75 - 99

Fire Danger Index Catastrophic - 100+ Low to moderate - 0 to 11 High – 12- 24 Very high - 25 to 49 Catastrophic - 100+ Fire control normally not possible. Rapid spread of fire. People in the path of a fire may be killed or seriously injured. Some homes are likely to be destroyed. However, well- prepared and actively defended homes can offer safety during a fire. Severe - 50 to 74 Extreme – 75 - 99

Fire Danger Index Catastrophic - 100+ Low to moderate - 0 to 11 High – 12- 24 Very high - 25 to 49 Catastrophic - 100+ Fire control not possible nor safe. Rapid spread of fire, unpredictable. People in the path of a fire may be killed or seriously injured. Many homes are very likely to be destroyed. Only well-constructed, well-prepared and actively defended homes are likely to offer safety during a fire. Severe - 50 to 74 Extreme – 75 - 99

Fire Danger Index Catastrophic - 100+ Low to moderate - 0 to 11 High – 12- 24 Very high - 25 to 49 Catastrophic - 100+ Fire is uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast moving. Very high level threats to life and property on a large scale. There is a high likelihood that people in the path of a fire will be killed or seriously injured. Many homes are very likely to be destroyed. Even the best prepared homes will not be safe. Severe - 50 to 74 Extreme – 75 - 99
