2 Mission Statement  The SME Education Foundation serves the members of the manufacturing community by providing leadership for the advancement of education for manufacturing through our grants and scholarships.

3 Foundation Background  Formed by SME in 1979  SME is the sole shareholder of the Foundation  Governed by a Board of Directors who are selected and approved by the Foundation Board and confirmed by the Executive Compensation Committee of SME

4 Long Range Goals  To be recognized as the leader in manufacturing related education  To favorably impact the quality, quantity and relevance of manufacturing education  To be a catalyst for attracting young people into careers in manufacturing, engineering, science and technology  To increase financial support for the mission  To maintain an influential and dedicated board of directors  To maintain a solid and positive working relationship with SME

5 Foundation Focus Funding in 3 major areas:  Youth Programs  Scholarships  College & University Programs (MEP Grants)

6 Youth Program Strategy  Driven by the new National Youth Council chaired by Mary Ellen Heyde  Focused on integrating and leveraging SME and related youth programs  Goal is for all youth programs to be self-sustaining  The National Youth Council will make its first award in June ‘03

7 STEPS: SME’s Signature Youth Program  By the end of 2002 nearly 2,500 students will have participated in a STEPS camp experience  Four new STEPS camps in ‘02-’03 in Michigan and Illinois  Industry partners including Caterpillar and Ford Motor Company have provided full funding for STEPS

8 Scholarships  2002 scholarship commitment of $283K  88 students will receive an SME scholarship this year  53 recipients are SME members

9 The Origin of MEP  Created in 1998 with $3,000,000 in funding from SME  Foundation committed to fund MEP grants with $1,000,000 + per year in 1998, 1999 & 2000  Three phases  College and University Grants  Scholarships  Youth Programs (K-12)

10 MEP Grants-to-date  Since 1998, $6.4 million invested in 31 major grants  Grants made regionally--programs throughout North America  Equal consideration of two and four- year schools  SME is viewed as the leading professional society for improving manufacturing education

11 What has MEP achieved?  Support for new degrees & options:  Washington State Univ., Vancouver  California State Univ., Long Beach  University of Texas, El Paso  Southwest Texas State University  PRIME Coalition in Pittsburgh – 3 community colleges & 2 universities  University of Detroit Mercy  University of Missouri, Rolla

12 More MEP Successes  New labs:  Cleveland State University  Kansas State University  Tufts University  Nicholls State University  Oregon State University  Innovative Programs:  Michigan Tech University  San Jose State University  California Polytechnic, SLO
