1
Properties A property is something that is true for all situations.
2
Properties of Multiplication Zero Identity Commutative Distributive Associative
3
Properties of Addition Associative Identity Commutative Distributive
4
Distributive Property 4(3 + 5) = 4 x 3 + 4 x 5 The distributive property lets you multiply a sum by multiplying each addend separately and then add the products.
5
Commutative Property of addition and multiplication Order doesn’t matter The word "commutative" comes from "commute" or "move around", so the Commutative Property is the one that refers to moving stuff around. A x B = B x A A + B = B + A
6
Associative Property of multiplication and Addition Associative Property (a · b) · c = a · (b · c) Example: (6 · 4) · 3 = 6 · (4 · 3) Associative Property (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) Example: (6 + 4) + 3 = 6 + (4 + 3) The word "associative" comes from "associate" or "group";the Associative Property is the rule that refers to grouping. Changing the grouping will not change your answer
7
Identity Properties If you add 0 to any number, the number stays the same. A + 0 = A or 5 + 0 = 5 If you multiply any number times 1, the number stays the same. A x 1 = A or 5 x 1 = 5

Definition of Zero - Product Property Zero - Product Property states that if the product of two factors is zero, then at least one of the factors must be zero. Examples of Zero - Product Property If xy = 0, then x = 0 or y = 0.
