2 The Vietnam War: Some context  Up until the so-called Global War on Terrorism began after the 9/11 attacks in late 2001 the Vietnam War was considered the most controversial military action in U.S. history.  Because many Americans so no direct threat to the U.S. by the Communists in North Vietnam this military conflict was considered very controversial.  Because the U.S. already had experience with two “Red Scares” (1920s and 1950s) the nation was well aware of the threat of communism.  Over 58,000 U.S. military personnel eventually died fighting in the Vietnam War. Four U.S. presidents acted as Commander-in-Chief during this “war.”
