2. English Language Teaching and Learning is typically perceived as a process of familiarisation with the globalised culture American culture British Culture (Possibly in that order)

3. In the European context, a soundly multilingual one, the extensive teaching and learning of English has earned it the status of a second or third language for many Europeans.

4. Thus, teaching and learning English, along with translation and free movement of European citizens, contributes to Europeans getting better acquainted with the European civilisation(s) and culture(s). A role similar to that of French, in other words. Examples: Basque culture, the popularity of Pessoa after translations into English, Scandinavian writers, Orhan Pamuk.

5. Getting acquainted with (other) European culture(s) is an indispensable ingredient for any form of substantial European integration. Teaching and learning English can contribute to exactly this process of getting acquainted with things European.

6. The new European Studies BA, offered by the School of Humanities of the University of Cyprus is in this vein. Multidisciplinary character. Three language strands (more to come), two must be combined. Each language major includes a range of topics.
