UK – holidays, traditions, sport, culture BANK HOLIDAYS BANK HOLIDAYS BANK HOLIDAYS = official days off in the UK. The banks close for a day and so do most businesses and services. 1. New Year’s Day 1. New Year’s Day is the first bank holiday in the year. It is on 1 st January. The night before is called New Year´s Eve. Day 2.May Day is in early May. It is a public holiday celebrating the beginning of the summer on the first Monday of May. Many traditional dances are associated with this day. E. g. Maypole (májka) dancing around a tall pole (kůl). People also decorate their houses with floral garlands (květinovými věnci).

UK – holidays, traditions, sport, culture UK – holidays, traditions, sport, culture BANK HOLIDAYS 3.Spring Bank Holiday 3.Spring Bank Holiday is at the end of May. 4.Summer Bank Holiday - 4.Summer Bank Holiday - In Scotland it is celebrated on the first Monday of August and in the rest of the country on the last Monday of August, is a bank holiday which marks the end of summer. Usually people improve their homes and gardens or go to trips with family. 5.Easter 5.Easter is dedicated to the death and coming to life of Jesus Christ. Two banks holidaysGood FridayEaster Monday Two banks holidays are included – Good Friday and Easter Monday. People go to churches, decorate Easter eggs and take part in typical competitions. Children believe in Easter bunny who hides eggs in their gardens. 5

They have to wait for unwrapping their presents till the morning of December 25. at noon, they eat lunch with their family. 7.Boxing Day (Dec 26) - 7.Boxing Day (Dec 26) - they visit their relatives. OTHER HOLIDAYS 1.New Year´s Eve - 1.New Year´s Eve - People usually make resolutions, go to parties to celebrate and wait till the midnight when fireworks begin. For example firework around the London Eye is considered to be one of the most beautiful in England.

UK – holidays, traditions, sport, culture OTHER HOLIDAYS 2.St. Valentine´s Day – 2.St. Valentine´s Day – February 14th - People express their love by making sweet cards, taking their loved-ones to dinners etc. There are many superstitions (pověr). For example if woman saw a robin (drozd), she would marry a sailor one day. 3.St. Patrick´s Day - Patrick was the man who brought Christianity to Ireland. Celebrations are majestic - parades, colouring river to green, drinking green beers and much more.

UK – holidays, traditions, sport, culture OTHER HOLIDAYS - 4.St George´s Day - On 23rd April it is celebrated brave George, saint patron of England, who died because of his beliefs. He was against tortures on Christians by Romans. 5.Halloween - 31st October 5.Halloween - 31st October - Halloween and its traditions come from Ireland. Celts used to wear horrible masks to protect themselves from evil souls. Pumpkins, costumes and trick or treats are essential. It’s connected with ghosts and witches. At parties people dress up in strange costumes. Children celebrate it by dressing up in Halloween costumes with masks over their faces.

UK – holidays, traditions, sport, culture SPORT England Most favourite team sports are football, rugby, cricket. Most favourite individual sports are: badminton, athletics, tennis, golf, horseracing. Scotland The national sport is golf. Football is also popular. But another important sport is tossing the caber (házení kmene, klády).Wales The national sport is rugby.

The British like spending their leisure time with the family, pets in their houses. They say: "My house my castle".
