Beam Test Plans at the KEK Fuji Beam line (as of Nov-7 2007) S. Uozumi In this slide I will give my idea for somewhat detailed beam test plan. Let’s discuss and finalize it !

Good and not-so-bad news We can borrow the ATLAS SCT (Thanks to Hara-sensei) ! One undergrad student working on SCT in Tsukuba will finish his grad thesis with SCT data which will be taken in our BT. The SCT can be operated only through Windows PC. Therefore we have to take all the data with Windows PC this time (the PC can be borrowed from Tsukuba). We can also borrow X-Z movable stage from ATLAS (thanks to Kohriki-san and Ikegami-san), but it may be difficult to link the stage movement with our DAQ system. Need to perform hand-input scan ?

People D. H. Kim (KNU) ? ~ ? J. S. Suh (KNU) ? ~ ? D. Kong (KNU) ? ~ ? K. Kawagoe (Kobe) Nov 17~19, 23~25 D. Jeans (kobe) Nov12~end T. Kaneko (Kobe) Nov15~end H. Ikeda (Kobe) Nov15~end K. Yamazaki (Tsukuba) Nov 16 ? ~ end Y. Takahashi (Tsukuba) start~end (can not enter to restricted area) “start” means start of preparation, Nov-12 on Monday. “end” means the date where everything is done (includes possible delays). Let me know if there are modifications needed on the participating period.

Overall schedule ~Nov-12 th : Gather equipments at KEK Nov 12 th ~24 th : Start preparation of DAQ, SCT and SciFi system at Fuji B4 by people who can participate. Nov 16 th : Almost participants are at KEK, take radiation training and have a kick-off meeting. Nov 17 th,18 th (weekend) : Prepare everything as much as possible Nov 19 th ~20 th : Beamtime starts, setup on beamline Nov 20 th ~ 24 th : As soon as the setup finished, start comissioning run followed by strip scan and run as long as possible Nov 25 th : end of the beamtime (could be extended), withdraw from beamline

Beam line setup e-e- Veto counter Movable stage SciFi tracker Strip scintillators Scinti Counter (3x3cm) Each SCT has 2 layers with a small stereo angle. Atlas SCT (6x12cm) Trigger counters (4x11cm?) temp. sensor

Scintillator-strip assembly spacer As done at the DESY BT, strips will be mounted in acrylic frame, and the scintillator layers will be installed in the detector frame and light shielded. To all the MPPC, uniform bias voltage will be applied by source meter. Signal from MPPCs will be read by CAMAC ADC after signal amplification by ATLAS ASD. Frame

Operation / Readout electronics Scintillator strips … MPPCs are biased by source meter, signal will be amplified by ATLAS ASD and read with CAMAC ADC. Trigger / veto counters … read with CAMAC ADC. SciFi tracker … (amp+) discri + CAMAC coincidence register. SCT … need dedicated VME modules and software. Movable stage … need dedicated system. Temperature sensor … can be read by Windows PC ?

Strips to be tested - Let’s start with newer stuff, since beam time and rate are limited - 1.Extruded 3 mm thick direct readout without TiO 2 2.Extruded 3 mm thick fiber EMBEDDED readout with TiO 2 3.Extruded 3 mm thick fiber EMBEDDED readout without TiO 2 4. Extruded 3 mm thick fiber readout with TiO 2 5. Extruded 3 mm thick direct readout with TiO 2 6. Extruded 3 mm thick fiber readout without TiO 2 7.Kuraray strip 3 mm thick fiber readout 8.Kuraray strip 3 mm thick direct readout 9.Kuraray strip 2 mm thick direct readout Old ones Newly produced Kuraray as Reference Will start with (1~3)+7 with ~3 different strips, and if time permits test 9, 8 and 4, and if time permits we will test 9, 8 and 4~5. Use the same MPPCs if possible, for direct comparison. Detailed plan will be finalized at kick-off and on-shift meeting.

Run Plan and DAQ Time Estimation Assume ~1000 events / mm 2 (is it enough?) 10 x 45 x 1000 = 450000 events per a strip 450k events / 10 (30) Hz = 750 (250) min per a strip Random trigger run ~ 5 min, taken once per an hour 12~13 (4~5) hours to scan one strip. Perform multiple (2~3) layers scan. Configuration change ~ 2 hours (?) Need to take data with MIP position scan and Random trigger (pedestal and MPPC gain by dark noise) With each type of scintillator. Red numbers … estimation with the SCT

Data Monitoring & Analysis We will perform “on-the-fly” analysis during data taking. Need always to watch gain (by pedestal run), light yield, and position dependence for all the strips on beamline. Better to plot the temperature, too. The analysis will run on Linux PC.

Startup jobs DAQ system and Electronics (1 staff+1 student) –Operation of CAMAC, SCT, temperature monitoring system and movable stage. –Manage trigger logic and electronics. Beamline devices (1+3) –Maintain trigger, veto, SciFi, SCT hardware –Installation (need to make support frames), cabling, alignment, HV, setting threshold and timing. Detector + movable stage (1+1~2) –Assemble scintillator-strip module, alignment, connection, cabling. –Check signal by beta-ray source –Detector and movable stage installation on beamline –Install temprature monitoring sensors at the same time. Analysis codes (0~1 + 0~1) –Discuss data format with DAQ team –Prepare root macro for “on-the-fly” analysis

Shift plan 3 shifts per a day (0~8, 8~16, 16~24), 2~3 persons (at least 1 staff + students) in one shift. Official language is English during the beam test ! To share all the information, DO NOT use Japanese as possible as you can ! Contact me anytime (Satoru : 080-3500-8846) if you have any trouble during your shift.

Stuffs to borrow from KEK Movable stage and PC for control (from KEK ATLAS group) CAMAC and NIM crates, modules –Conicidence registers –Discriminators –Gate generators –Delay modules –NIM amps –Linear fan-out –Visual scaler –Clock generator Electric parts Beta-ray source And more …

Radiation training / accommodation Make registration as KEK rad-worker ASAP via the KEK web site! ( http://www.kek.jp/uskek/ )http://www.kek.jp/uskek/ In addition to the rad training at KEK, beamline lecture will be needed. I will ask KEK person to give a lecture on Oct-16 (Fri). For accommodation, you have to make the KEK dorm reservation by yourselves! Unfortunately dormitory is already full for some dates (Nov-13,14,19,20..), but you can join to waiting list. After the reservation, let me know which date you couldn’t take the room, then I will try to find another accomodation for those days. Let me know if you have any questions.

Is there anything missing?
