2 Language Objective: We will write complete sentences using the modals can, might, may, and must (have to, ought to, shall) in three forms: declarative negative Interrogative.

3 Application (Why?) We use modals before the verb to add a very specific meaning to the verb.

4 Parts of Speech: Verbs Modals Can: shows ability
May: shows permission or chance Might: shows possibility or chance Must: shows requirement

6 How does the meaning change?
Students must study during recess. Students may study during recess. Students can study during recess. Students might study during recess.

7 Formulas & Examples Declarative + Subject + modal + verb + finisher.
The storm might cause the power to go out.

8 Example: Negative - Subject + modal + not + verb + finisher.
Children must not play outside during lightning storms.

9 Modal + subject + verb+ finisher?
Interrogative ? Future: Modal + subject + verb+ finisher? Example: May the students walk home in the rain if they use their umbrellas?
