Summary Born in Stratford-on-Avon in 1564 during the Elizabethan era, the son of a glove maker, Shakespeare married at 18 and fathered three children. Leaving his family in Stratford, he moved to London and became an actor and a successful playwright. In 1599, he became part owner of London’s new Globe Theatre and director of his own theatre company. He invigorated crowds. Later in his life, Shakespeare published his sonnets. He dies in 1616.
