Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) has received much attention in the last decade. A company that adopts CIM practices is supposed to operate in an innovative and technologically advanced manner. However, if such practices are not carefully designed and implemented, they might end up being costly and non-profitable. As a result, a company that intends to adopt a CIM environment needs to spend considerable time in analyzing the various tradeoffs prior to implementing such a system. This project considers a CIM network for a large corporation, which is implemented in a Network Simulation tool, and analyzes the Quality of Service tradeoffs in the system by means of simulation. The following sections will first provide a brief description of CIM systems and then explain the architecture of the system that has been considered for this project. 2

At this point, one might wonder what is Computer Integrated Manufacturing. There is actually no precise definition of the concept of CIM. As Riley and Cox state: "Ask twenty engineers, twenty managers and twenty information technology specialists to define the concept of CIM, and you'll get sixty different answers.“ However, CIM is well described by Melnyk and Narasimhan "The computer assisted integration of the production process and operations control functions needed for optimal deployment and productive use of the minimum manufacturing and management resources required to meet specific strategic business objectives.“ In other words, when implementing CIM, a company uses computers in an effort to benefit from increased flexibility, improved quality, reduction in inventory, reduction in space needed shorter lead times and increased productivity. 3

For the purposes of this project, a CIM network for a large corporation was considered for implementation in the OPNET modeler simulation tool, for Quality of Service study and analysis. The corporation’s CIM network consists of a series of layers, which may be spread over large geographical areas. More specifically and beginning from the very bottom layer, the corporation network consists of the following layers: 1. Manufacturing or Assembly Cell layer. 2. Section or Factory Floor layer. 3. Factory or Facility layer. 4. Corporation layer. 5
6
The cell layer is the lowest layer of the network hierarchy and is responsible for the end-product manufacturing. In order to perform its manufacturing task, the manufacturing cell utilizes various machines, which are directly controlled by computers As seen in the diagram, the manufacturing cell consists of the following devices: · Cell Controller This component of the manufacturing cell may be considered as the “brains” of the cell’s operation. Most of the tasks performed in the cell are controlled and monitored by this component. Additionally, the cell controller is able to communicate with the upper layers of the network hierarchy. 6

Directly above the cell layer in the corporation’s network layering hierarchy is the section layer. Sections consist of a group of manufacturing cells, which perform functionally related tasks and vary from 10 to 30. In addition, sections employ a section controller, which in a similar fashion to the cell controller, monitors the section’s operation and interacts with adjacent or upper layers 8

One step above the section layer comes the factory layer. The factory layer is composed by a group of 3 to 8 sections, depending on the factory’s primary functionality In broad terms, it performs tasks that are logically similar in concept with the section layer. One of the factory’s sections is selected at random to serve as a main section in the factory’s scope. This particular section is equipped with an extra workstation, whichis responsible for the overall supervision of the manufacturing process in the whole factory andis called factory supervisory workstation. 10

The corporation layer merely represents the company as one logical entity. This layer may span a large geographical area and is interconnected through a public ATM network Practically, this layer represents all of the manufacturing factories that make up the corporation. However, the corporation layer includes one additional site, which is the corporation’s headquarters. The headquarters site has a task similar to the factory’s business management local area network, in that it is responsible for the management of the whole corporation. 12
