Math 5 Classifying 2-D Shapes Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

In this lesson we will learn about classifying polygons by their unique and common properties.

Math Warm-up 8 2 7

Math Warm-up - ANSWER You can use multiplication to find the answer. 27 x 8 = 216 82168216 2 7

In this lesson we will answer the question: How do you identify, describe, analyze, compare, and classify triangles and quadrilaterals by their properties?

Materials needed: You will need to print out the shapes templates that goes with this lesson. You will need to cut out the shapes carefully so you can move them into groups to match the criteria you create.

Vocabulary Review Equilateral triangle – All sides are equal. Isosceles triangle – Two sides are the same length. Scalene triangle – No sides are the same length. Right triangle – One angle is a right angle(90º).

Vocabulary Review Acute triangle – All 3 angles are acute angles (less than 90º). Obtuse triangle – One angle is an obtuse angle (greater than 90º).

Vocabulary Review Quadrilateral – A quadrilateral is any polygon with 4 sides. Parallelogram – both pairs of opposite sides parallel and equal in length. Trapezoid – only 1 pair of parallel sides. Rectangle – a parallelogram with 4 right angles

Vocabulary Review Rhombus – a parallelogram with all sides the same length. Square – A rectangle with all sides the same length. A square can also be called a rhombus. Generalization – A generalization can be made based on rules.

Connecting to Previous Learning In Level 4 you explored the properties of two-dimensional figures. You learned right triangles as a category, and how to identify right triangles.

Connecting to Previous Learning In the previous lesson you explored what is and what is not a polygon, while learning the 2 categories of regular and irregular polygons. In this lesson you will continue to explore how to categorize shapes based on their common properties.

Document Camera Get your notebook and pencil ready. Make sure you have the Lesson # and date on your page.

Guided Practice 1.You will work with your classmates to organize your shapes. You will need to decide how the shapes are alike and different. 2.We will conclude the activity with the Doc Camera and analyze the properties of the shapes provided.

Classifying Shapes Activity Using the Doc Camera How did you do?

We are going to follow an online activity for practice with a 10 question quiz to follow. Use your Math Journal to write notes and answers to questions as we go through this together. http://www.mathsisfun.com/quadril aterals.html In your Math Notebook Independent Practice

In this lesson we continued to explore how to categorize shapes based on their common properties. You need to remember the properties of shapes and how they are categorized. Review the content of this lesson as many times as you need. There is so much vocabulary in geometry! Lesson Review

Quick Check 1.A square and a rhombus both have four sides that are equal in length. How can you tell the difference between the 2 quadrilaterals? 2.Why can a rectangle also be called a parallegram? In your Math Notebook

Quick Check ANSWER 1.A square and a rhombus both have four sides that are equal in length. How can you tell the difference between the 2 quadrilaterals? Answer: A rhombus does not always have 4-90º angles as a square must always have. A rhombus has 2 acute and 2 obtuse angles. In your Math Notebook

Quick Check- ANSWER 2. Why can a rectangle also be called a parallegram? A parallelogram has both opposite sides at equal distance….they are parallel. All 4 angles measure 90º, as does a rectangle. As such, the rectangle shares the properties for a parallelogram.

Today you learned how to categorize triangles and quadrilaterals. Good Work with this lesson.
