For ease in processing and simplification of electronics, these analog signals are converted to digital signals.  Analog signal are continuous in time.  Digital signals are created by sampling an analog signal at discrete time intervals.  The electronic device used for conversion is referred to as an analog to digital (A/D) converter.  The rate at which the sampling is performed can affect whether the digital signal accurately represents the original analog signal.  Faster signals require faster sampling.
