Letter Writing 3 Objectives In working on this project you will learn how to write: A Business Letter A formal letter A letter of Application with a CV/Resume An Informal letter You will also be meeting the following Common Core objectives: Introduce Text Types and Purposes: Use words, phrases, and clauses to create cohesive links between the major sections of the text. [CC.9- 10.W.1.c] Establish and maintain a formal style and objective tone when writing. [CC.9-10.W.1.d] Write informative/explanatory texts clearly and accurately through the effective selection and organization of content. [CC.9-10.W.2] Using precise language, develop a topic with well-chosen, relevant facts, concrete details, quotations, or other information. [CC.9-10.W.2.b & CC.9-10.W.2.d] Conduct research projects to draw evidence from literary or informational texts to answer a question or solve a problem. [CC.9-10.W.7 & CC.9-10.W.9]

In these lessons we will continue learning how to: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. [CC.11-12.L.1 & CC.11- 12.L.1.a] Use reference resources such as dictionaries to resolve issues of punctuation & grammatical usage. [CC.11-12.L.1.b, CC.11-12.L.4.c CC.11-12.L.4.d] Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, hyphenation, and spelling when writing. [CC.11-12.L.2, CC.11-12.L.2.a & CC.11-12.L.2.b] Apply knowledge of language to vary syntax for effect and to help understand how language functions in different contexts. [CC.11-12.L.3 & CC.11-12.L.3.a] Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown words and phrases. [CC.11-12.L.4] Use context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. In these lessons we will continue learning how to: Identify and correctly use patterns of word changes that indicate different meanings or parts of speech. A Résumé or Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a list of your professional accomplishments. It should contain only factual information about you such as your full name, address, date of birth, contact details educational qualifications and professional experience. It is also useful for potential employers if you also include a passport sized photograph with your CV. As a general rule you should write your CV in 12pt font and usually it should not be more than 2 sides of A4. (Mine is in 11pt and runs to 4 pages, but after 40 years work, I’ve done quite a lot!) You should set out your letter of application as follows: Your Name Your Street Address PO Box No Post/Zip code Recipient Name Recipient Business Address Recipient PO Box No Recipient Post/Zip code Date Dear (whoever the contact name/position is on the advert) Introductory Paragraph: Begin by stating what job you are applying for. Paragraph 2 – Introduce Yourself: Very briefly mention how your skills and experience match the advertised job and why you make an excellent candidate for the position; this will give the employer a preview of the rest of your letter. Paragraph 3 - Your current situation: Pick up on the job requirements outlined in the advert and focus on any of your current skills or responsibilities that correspond to those requested. For example, if you’re still studying, focus on the relevant aspects or modules of your course. Paragraph 4 – Why You: Explain why you are interested in the job and why you make an excellent candidate for the position. Mention specific qualifications listed in the job posting, and explain how you meet those qualifications and provide specific examples that demonstrate your abilities. Paragraph 5 – Closing paragraph: In the final paragraph you should say where you can be contacted, when you’d be available to start work and that you agree to work the advertised hours. Thank the employer for his/her consideration of your application. Paragraph 6 - Conclusion This should include a ‘call to action’ statement or end the letter on a positive note. Signature: Always remember to sign the letter and to type/print your name underneath your signature. If you have named the person at the start of the letter then sign ‘Yours Sincerely’ If the letter is addressed to an un-named person, ex ‘The HR Manager’ then you should sign ‘Yours Faithfully’. Write and print a letter of application in response to this job advertisement. [25 Marks] Submit by Thursday 30 April. Summer Play-Scheme Assistants Required Must be available for a four week period covering the last two weeks in July and the first two weeks in August. You should be aged between 16-19 and in good general health. This job will involve working with 10-14 year old children leading them in a variety of activities such as sports coaching, swimming, art, drama, creative writing, story reading and story telling, computer gaming and ICT skills.
