Ergonomics G raphics theory
2
Ergonomics Ergonomics is… The science of making products and information easy to use by the people they are aimed at. e.g. a perforation cut on a cereal box to make it easy to open.
3
Factors to consider The following is a list of categories to consider when designing a new product Shape Size Colour Smell Weight Strength Finish Rigidity Light Noise Temperature
4
In Graphics If we look at this logo, we can see it is very decorative. But, from an ergonomic point of view it is very difficult to read Triflo ra It is important that lettering is quick and easy to read on posters, adverts etc. …in order to sell products Triflora
5
Logos and ergonomics Redesign the logo for ‘paperchase’, a company that sell various packaging for gifts, ensure: It relates to packaging/celebration Ensure it is easy to see and bold Ensure it uses a good colour scheme Paperc hase
6
Style and colour It is important to use a text that is easy to read- particularly for warning signs like fire exits Style Style Colour contrast is also an important ergonomic factor. The fact that a significant minority of the population are red/green colour blind should also be taken into account EASY TO READ NOT EASY TO READ
7
Anthropometrics Anthropometrics are concerned with the application of ergonomics to the human form They are used to describe the ‘user’ or ‘target’ population for a product Definition: ‘Anthropo’ means ‘human’ And ‘Metrics’ means Measurements = Human measurements that help us design a product that fits a user perfectly
8
Data for sitting position and hand Here are some measurements that show a man sitting down and a hand, the measurements are shown in millimetres
9
Hand uses Most graphical products are hand held and special attention should therefore be paid to: Hand dimensions The readability of text at varying levels from the eye Overall size
10
Tasks 1.List 3 factors to consider when designing a new product 2.What is colour contrast? 3.Design your own logo for a stop sign (remember it is a warning sign 4.What is anthropometrics the study of? 5.What unit of measurement do we use to measure anthropometrics? 6.What must we be aware of in graphics when concerning anthropometric data
