3 Module Leaders’ Roles Every module has two module leaders: Creates the main lecture/tutorial notes Writes coursework and examinations Moderates the coursework and examinations results Serves as a lecturer for that module (usually in London) Writes localised lecture/tutorial notes Marks the coursework and examinations (lecturers/tutors might also be involved in marking) Serves as a lecturer for that module

5 Module aims The module aims : To understand the benefit of scaling IP addresses To understand the basic concept of Wide Area Networks (WANs). To differentiate between different WAN. To understand and configure Frame Relays in the routers To identify PPP operations to encapsulate WAN data on Cisco routers. To understand Network documentation, security and trouble shooting. To understand common WAN implementation issues.

6 Module outcomes after successful completion Explain the advantages of using private IP addresses, DHCP and NAT. Describe the concept of WAN and differentiate between different types of WAN such as Frame relay, x.25, ATM.

7 Module outcomes after successful completion… Monitor Frame relay operations in the routers. Design WAN, document, manage and troubleshoot. Identify PPP operations. Explain the purpose of Access Control List and its implementation. Work effectively in a small team to demonstrate a performance measurement in WANs and establish a network performance baseline.

8 Module Assessments Assessments: 40% Examination 10% Open book test 50% practical [ individual work]  Tutorials are related to the lectures and examinations.  Workshops are related to the Assignment. Note:- Students should obtain 40% pass on aggregate from examination and coursework.

Frame Relay: Frame Relay Concepts, Configuring Frame Relay. Network Security: Secure Router Network Services, Cisco SDM, Secure Router management. Access Control Lists : Creating, applying, editing and troubleshooting ACLs

12 Wide Area Networks(WAN) WAN: communications networks which operates beyond the geographical areas of a LANs. –WANs connect devices that are separated by a long distance geographical area than a LAN. –WANs use the carriers, such as phone companies, cable companies, and network providers. –WANs use serial connections of various types to provide access over large geographical areas.

14 WAN Devices… Modem: Modulates an analog carrier signal to digital. Demodulates digital signal to analog signal. Example:- Cable modem, ADSL modem, DSL modem that transmit broadband frequency. CSU/DSU: channel service unit (CSU) and a data service unit (DSU). CSU is responsible for the connection to the telecom network DSU is responsible for handling the interface with the DTE Often combined into a single piece of equipment.

15 CSU/DSU The CSU provides termination for the digital signal and ensure connection integrity through error correction and line monitoring. The DSU converts the T-carier line frames into frames that LAN can interpret and vice-versa.

16 WAN Devices… WAN switch : These devices typically switch traffic. Operates at the data link layer of the OSI model Example- Frame Relay, ISDN

17 WAN Devices… Router : Provides internetworking and WAN access interface ports that are used to connect to the service provider network.

25 ISDN The Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) prescribes two levels of service, – The Basic Rate Interface (BRI), intended for the homes and small enterprises – The Primary Rate Interface (PRI), for larger applications.
