Hows everyone? Are you ready to learn something new? With career and technical education we teach you realistic skills used in the work place but also how to work efficiently. You can’t just go out and film without a plan it wastes too much time.

4. Guiding Question:
How can I create an effective storyboard for video production?
We want to make sure we have an effective storyboard that can be understood by the rest of the production crew.

One thing I hear a lot when we start storyboarding is; I’m a terrible drawer, I can’t do this. You don’t have to make a detailed drawing a sketch with stick figures is fine.

6. What is storyboarding?
Storyboarding is the process of planning and creating a visual script with a series of sketches and notes.
Storyboarding is part of the preproduction phase of video production.
What else is part of preproduction.

7. Why is storyboarding important?
A visual script is usually much easier to understand than a written script.
Visual planning helps us make sure our message is clear before we begin filming.
Storyboarding avoids wasted work recreating scenes, speeds editing, and helps ensure our story will fit in the time given.
Seldom is one person doing all the work in a video production. You need to be able to hand off your storyboard to another member of the production crew and they need to be able to understand it. Sketch vs. Drawing

9. What is included in an effective storyboard?
Character & Background sketches.
Action Notes: Camera Shots & Movement, Character movement, What’s happening in the scene?
Audio Notes: Dialog, Narration, Sound Effects, Music

What is dialog? What is narration. I want you to look at this video and see if you can identify one of the shots from your handout. Where and how was it used? Is it effective?

10. How can I evaluate my finished storyboard?
Can the story be told with only your images or only your notes? (Fold)
Are the 5 w’s accounted for?
Show it to your classmate without telling him/her anything about it.
Does it make sense? Can your classmate understand your completed story?
Notice on your rubric there is a peer evaluation. Always share your work with a peer before you turn it in for a grade.

11. Assignment
Create a storyboard for a 30 second video showing the importance of one part of the “Washington Way”.
Use your storyboard template to create a video story showing why this theme is important.
Include detailed notes on the action and audio in your production.
