2 Offspring arise from a single organism and inherit the genes of only that parent. Asexual Reproduction in Sexual Reproduction Involves the fusion of male and female gametes through fertilization to produce a zygote.

3 Testes: Produce sperm and sex hormones Epididymides: Sites of maturation and some storage of sperm. Vasa deferentia: conduct and store sperm Seminal vesicles: contribute fluid to semen. Prostate and Bulbourethral glands: contributes fluid and semen. Urethra: Conducts sperm and urine. Penis: organ of copulation. Male Reproductive System

5 The Testes -A testis has lobules which contain 1-3 seminiferous tubules. -Tubules can add to a length of 250 meters. -Cells undergo spermatogenesis in the seminiferous tubules.

7 Hormonal Regulation -The luteinizing hormone (LH) in males, controls androgen testosterone production in the seminiferous tubules. -The hormones allow a negative feedback relationship, that continues sperm and testosterone production. - The main sex hormone in males is testosterone. -Testosterone is necessary for sperm maturation

8 Sperm -There are three distinct parts of a mature sperm: a head, a middle piece, and a tail. -The middle piece and tail both have microtubules. -Mitochondria, wrapped around the middle piece, supplies the energy to move. -The head is covered by the acrosome (cap-like).

9 -The average male ejaculates 50- 150 million sperm/mL. -The male can be considered infertile if he only ejaculates 25 million sperm/mL. -Less than 100 sperm actually reach the vicinity of the egg. -Usually only one sperm enters an egg. -The sperm usually travels 2 hours, at 12.5cm/h to reach the egg. 10 Ovaries: produce egg and sex cell hormones. Oviducts (fallopian tubes): conduct egg; location of fertilization. Uterus: Houses developing embryo and fetus. Vagina: organ of copulation and serves as birth canal Female Reproductive System

12 Ovarian Cycle Follicular phase ( days 1-13) -FSH -Follicle maturation -Estrogen Ovulation (day 14) -LH spike Luteal phase (days 15-28) -LH -Corpus Luteum -Progesterone

14 Fertilization -fertilized egg travels to the uterus -increase in estrogen and progesterone shuts down anterior pituitary -no new follicles mature during pregnancy

15 -STDs can be caused by bacterial or viral infections. Ex: AIDS,genital herpes, hepatitis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis -Latex condoms are used to prevent the spread of an STD. -Prompt medical treatment should be sought when exposed to an STD. Sexually Transmitted Diseases
