Any disease that spreads from one person to another during sexual contact. 12 million new cases of STI’s are reported each year in USA (epidemic)

3 Concerns about STIs Cancer Cannot develop immunity to STIs
Infertility Cancer Cannot develop immunity to STIs Some STIs are incurable and even fatal.

4 Reasons for the STI Epidemic
Sexual intercourse at a young age, multiple sex partners. Precautions are not taken Do not seek immediate medical treatment.

7 Gonorrhea Bacterial STI, infects the urinary tract of males & females and the reproductive organs of females.

8 Genital Warts Most common viral STI Human Papilloma Virus
Once infected warts appear in clusters around the genitals (itching and burning) Warts can be removed, virus will remain, so warts may appear again. Genital warts have been linked to cervical cancer in women.

9 Genital Herpes Incurable viral STI
Produces painful blisters around the genitals. Medicine can help dry up the blisters. A women can infect her infant during birth, causing blindness and death.

10 Syphilis Bacterial STI that progresses through several distinct stages. Can be treated with antibiotics.

11 Pubic Lice/Scabies Both conditions cause itching and a rash.
Pubic Lice (crabs)- tiny insects that infest the hair around the genitals. Scabies- infestation of mites. Both conditions cause itching and a rash. Spread through direct physical contact with an infested person, clothing or bedding.Treatment- shampoos or ointments that kill the animals and eggs.

14 HIV & AIDS AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)
fatal disease of the immune system caused by a virus. Last and most severe stage of STI caused by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).

15 HIV Infection HIV cannot live outside body for very long.
Inside body HIV attacks the T cells (immune system). The fewer the T cells the more advanced the disease.

16 Symptoms of HIV and AIDS
3-4 weeks after exposure: fever, swollen lymph glands, tiredness. First symptoms go away after a few weeks, then…months/years with no signs. 7-10 years for AIDS to develop

17 AIDS… Opportunistic diseases- diseases that attack a person with weakened immune system A person with HIV has AIDS when T cells fall and the person has one or more opportunistic diseases. OD = tuberculosis, pneumonia

18 Transmission of HIV Four main ways HIV can be passed:
1. Sexual intercourse (semen/vaginal secretions) 2. Shared needles 3. Blood to blood contact 4. Mother to child ( pregnancy, birth, breast-feeding)

19 Testing and Treatment Testing Treatment No Cure
Blood Test- detects HIV antibodies HIV positive- someone who is infected with HIV Treatment No Cure Drugs that slow production of HIV in the T cells

20 Preventing HIV/Aids No risk= abstinence Preventive Behaviors:
1. Avoid contact w/ blood or body fluids 2. Know personal histories 3. Protected Sex 4. Avoid drugs 5. Get tested! 6. Act responsibly
