Social Change What are the sources of social change?

Values and Beliefs Ideology: a system of beliefs or ideas that justifies the social moral, religious, political, or economic interests held by a group. Social Movement: long term conscious effort to promote social change. Example are: prohibition, women’s rights, peace gay rights, and the civil rights movement

Technology When people find new ways to manipulate their environment. Discovery: new uses for existing elements. Invention: use of existing knowledge to create something that did not exists before

Diffusion When people borrow ideas, beliefs, and material objects from other society. The spreading of cultural traits from one society to another.

Physical Environment Droughts, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, fires, tidal wave. People build dams, new construction materials. Shortage of a natural resource like gasoline impact society. Longer line to get gas. Bikes become an alternative

Wars and Conquest Not as common but bring the greatest change. Loss of lives Destruction of property Economy: production of war materials Advance in technology and medicine Change in governments

Pair up with a classmate and together identify several examples for each sources of social change. Also show how all of these sources of social change have impact in our lives today? For diffusion include clothing, language, music, dance, and entertainment.
