What to expect in Year 6

Timetable Copy sent home to display.
Use it to pack your bag for the next day.

PE - Black shorts - Black or white socks - Plain white T-Shirt
- Plain trainers for outside PE - Black pumps indoor PE - Named ‘pump bag’ - Track suit in cold weather It is ESSENTIAL that every item of your child’s clothing and PE kit is clearly labelled with either permanent ink or name strips.

Uniform Boys: - Black ‘school type’ trousers or shorts
- White polo shirt - Newburgh sweatshirt - Black shoes (flat sole/low heels) -No boots or trainers - Black/White socks

Uniform Girls: - Black ‘school type’ trousers, shorts, skirt or pinafore - White polo shirt - Newburgh sweatshirt or cardigan - Black shoes (flat sole/low heels) -No boots or trainers - Black/White socks/Grey tights - Blue check dresses (Optional-Summer term only) - Plain blue/ black hair band (if required) No nail varnish or make up

Responsibilities House captains. Lunch and break duties.
Assembly monitors. Stay and Play monitors.

SATs Tests Year 6 Test dates Week commencing 11th May

English English tests English grammar, punctuation and spelling test ( SPAG) Reading test.

Writing Now assessed through Teacher Assessment only.
Our writing assessments will be moderated this year.

Maths Two papers lasting 45 minutes on separate days – no calculators allowed. Mental maths test

Science Teacher Assessment .
Science sampling tests – some children will be chosen to sit tests this year.

Level 6 tests Children working at level 5a/ b will also sit L6 papers in Reading, SPAG and Maths.

Teacher Assessments Ongoing throughout the year.
Pupils track own progress Parents kept informed through termly reports and parents evenings. Final assessment in end of year report.

How can parents help? Help with learning spellings.
Encourage reading : (novels and a variety of forms - leaflets, recipes, instructions, etc). Talk about stories: how characters behave and why / story structure – beginnings, development, ending.

How can parents help? Basics – tables, place value, 4 rules, estimating answers, maths vocabulary. Encourage careful reading of questions and checking of answers in homework. Revisewise website – BBC/ My Maths

Home learning Why do we set home learning?
To take responsibility for organising their work. To help pupils recognise the link between good study habits and higher standards of achievement. To consolidate, prepare for or extend work covered in school. To help raise standards of achievement. To allow children to prepare for secondary school. We value parent’s support in seeing that homework is done conscientiously and in the best possible conditions.
