9.1 Measuring Length Objective: To use the metric and English systems to measure length
2
English Units of length
Common units of length are inches(in), feet(ft), yards(yd) and miles(mi) Use the following table to convert To change from smaller to larger – divide To change from larger to smaller - multiply 1 foot 12 inches 1 yard 3 feet or 36 inches 1 mile 5,280 ft or 1,760 yd
3
Examples 8yd = _________ft 72in = _________yd 3ft = ________ in
2mi = _______ft Convert 50 inches to feet and inches Convert 23 ft into yards and feet
4
The Metric System The metric system is a base ten system just like our number system. The metric system has standard units of measure and prefixes. The standard unit of length is a meter (m)
5
Prefixes Symbol Unit Meaning km kilometer 1000 meters hm hectometer
dam dekameter 10 meters m meter 1 meter dm decimeter 0.1 meter cm centimeter 0.01 meter mm millimeter 0.001 meter
6
Converting To change to a smaller unit – multiply by powers of 10 or move decimal to right To change to a bigger unit – divide by powers of 10 or move decimal to left
7
Examples 6.5 m = ________mm 7.2 dam = _________cm
82.4 m = __________hm 756 km = ________m 24m = _________dm
8
Metric and English equivalents
1 inch = 2.54 cm 1 foot = cm 1 yard m 1 mile km
9
Examples 8 inches = _____centimeters 125 miles = _______ kilometers
26,800 millimeters = _______ inches
