Tactics Standard Grade Basketball

2 What Is A Tactic? A tactic is a plan that is made before you start playing in a game which considers your own or your opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. A strategy is a method of play involving the positioning of players. A tactic is a specific way of carrying out a particular strategy.

3 Deciding Tactics Tactics are decided based on your own strengths and your opponents weaknesses. Tactics can be Team or Individual and Attacking (offensive) or Defensive.

4 Attacking An attacking tactic is a game plan made up before or during a game to break down opposition defense or to score. Attacking Tactic - In badminton, I played several high overhead clears to the back right hand corner, my opponent struggled to return these shots with his weak backhand, I waited for a poor return and then played an unexpected fast downward smash to the left hand side of the court to win the point.

5 Defensive A defensive tactic is a game plan made up before or during a game to stop your opponents scoring. Defensive Tactic – In basketball, our team set up a zone defense (1-2-2), as our opponents were poor at shooting so we wanted to keep them as far away from the basket as possible. The zone defense also allowed us to get some rest, as apposed to man-to-man marking.

6 Before the Game Examples of factors considered before choosing a tactic - own team or individual strengths opponents’ strengths own team or individual weaknesses opponents’ weaknesses weather conditions how much time remaining team mate or opponent sent off or injured physical or mental demands of activity we were winning or losing Tactics may need to be changed during activities.

7 During The Game Examples of reasons for changing tactics during activities - man sent off or injured winning at the end of the game losing at the end of the game running out of time our opponents changed their tactics our opponents used a tactic we didn’t expect the conditions didn’t suit our tactics

Overload Width Mobility

9 Defensive Principles of Play
Width Width in defence is when we spread out defender across the front of the goal to prevent the attacking team penetrating the defence from the side. Depth This means that your defence is positioned at angles out from the goal. Players positioned at angles give each other support. Zone defence gives depth. Delay Pressurise the attacker with the ball. This slows down the attack and allows defenders to get in position. Good for slowing a fast break.

10 Man To Man Marking Man-to-man defense enables us to get pressure on the ball at all times ("on-ball defense"), while still protecting the basket. “The best man defense looks like a zone and the best zone defense looks like a man” Rules Know where your man and the ball is Never turn your back on your man or the ball Communicate with teammates STAY in position to help teammates Always be between basket and your man

11 ‘Protecting A Certain Area From Attack’
Zone Defence ‘Protecting A Certain Area From Attack’ Why? Not all teams have quick players that can cover man to man. Some players in the opposition might be too fast to cover individually. Forces the opponent to play a shot from far away: less likely to score Slows the game down. Time to catch breath Disadvantages Opposition can consistently score from far out. If you are losing, the opposition can waste time holding the ball.
